PBA bowler Brandon Novak arrested at 2024 U.S. Open
« on: February 03, 2024, 11:31:39 AM »
Watching the 2024 U.S. Open on BowlTV had some surprises.  People being frustrated, ripped jerseys, falls on the approaches, and a lot of ugly ball reaction.  However, game 2 of the 4th round of qualifying was the abrupt withdrawl of Brandon Novak as he was arrested inside Woodland Bowl by the U.S. Marshals.

Here's a news article on the story:

You can go back in the bowltv archive, it was game 2 of the cashers round when he got taken by the US Marshall's, Prather is on the approach and you can just see the look of utter confusion. Crazy situation.

Apparently, Riggs has the clip of when it happened posted on Youtube as well. I don't think the commentators knew what was going on as PB3 was in the middle of a story. Novak didn't even get to finish his frame. Here's what Riggs had.

So here is what I found from a news article:

Novak has been competing since 2012 on a high level, but this isn’t his first time dealing with law enforcement. Novak was arrested in 2022 in Franklin County, Ohio, for a TPO violation. He was also arrested in 2019 in Chillicothe for violation of a TPO two counts of tele harassment and a count of menacing stalking.

In a search locally Novak has been under investigation since February of 2023 by prosecutors for pandering and what appears to be the intent to buy, procure, and possess obscene materials involving a juvenile.

I pray for him that this isnt true.  If it is; I pray for those that were negatively affected by his behavior.

I watched a guy I know get arrested in El Paso during the USBC Open Championships in 2015. Police came right out on the lanes and hauled him out of there.

According to 11thFrame newest update - Novak was arrested on 15 counts related to child pornography.

The detective in the case told a Ross County grand jury Novak told the investigator he had bought videos of “gay sex” from Snapchat but did not know child porn was involved. Novak sent the videos to his Facebook account, and Facebook reported the videos to ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children). The IP address connected to the activity was traced to an address that is Novak’s fathers who had passed November 2022.

If you have an 11th Frame subscription - go read the full update on your own. Above is the cliffnotes version.

Ouch.. If this turns out to be true, this may be the last we see of Novak anywhere on the tour, if not the USBC. If he is a coach, there goes any certification he has, especially in regards to SafeSport.

Is he under contract with Storm? If so, is there any word from them on his status?

I know he parted with Storm and was recently throwing Brunswick brands. No clue if he is a staffer or not with B7.

Under safe sport usbc has been banning anyone who is a registered sex offender from being a member. Two here locally lost their USBC memberships for that reason. Even though they are registered and allowed to do so by law, some how safe sport/USBC is saying they cannot participate in sanctioned bowling at all. Which doesn't make sense if they are not in violation of their guidelines by the state. One is an employee of the bowling alley.

Probably depends on whether he "came out of the closet."

Maybe he'll be a spokesman for the "Phaze" line :)

With SafeSport, it's out of the USBC's hands. SafeSport came about from the SafeSport Act, which was passed by Congress, so there is nothing the USBC can effectively do to combat that, even if the person is abiding by state guidelines. Even more, all sports governing bodies have to conform to Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policies (MAAPP).

I'm not sure what those two members did, but also not my business to know; but with Novak, if this all is proven to be true, then there is a good chance that he could never again have anything to do with youth coaching: bowling, or otherwise.

Seems weird to ban sex offenders from adult sports. Obviously they shouldn't be around youth. Its just weird that they are allowed to by the definition of their release
work and live normal lives but not allowed to by a program set up in reference to youth even when youth arent involved.

They can work in a bowling center or own a bowling center just not bowl there sanctioned. No doubt Novack will lose his pba career and bowling anything sanctioned if he is found guilty.

I hope he is locked way for a long time personally.  Never mind the bowling aspect.  There is a lot more to life than just bowling.  He should not be allowed anywhere there is going to be children.  This is the third time getting arrested because the legal system did not take this serious enough from the beginning.  Pieces of paper and slaps on the wrist dont do anything to change the mindset of a criminal.  While this is the third arrest; this is actually the 4th time the legal system has had to get involved.  Maybe once Bubba gets his hands on him he will realize the seriousness of his actions.  He needs to be taught a lesson.

Adult sports is a different thing; yes, I'll agree with that. However, SafeSport doesn't just cover youth, as it also covers all adults, especially with pertaining to the Olympics and Paralympics, so there could be the chance that adults are covered by this as well. If bowling is ever brought up for reconsideration by the IOC, he would be ruled out of that as well, regardless of youth or adults involved.

But in terms of the actual incident and how this is involved, there were a few youth bowlers bowling at the US Open, which would cause SafeSport to come into play, so even if he were able to remain with the PBA, he would effectively permanently be out of the US Open and the Masters. The Senior US Open and Senior Masters might be available, but that's an argument for later.

What gets me here is that there while the PBA is a private company, they have no safeguards in their rulebook for handling this type of conduct, especially in regards to youth. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, there are only 3 references to PBA Jr. in their rulebook, and none of it addresses any protection of youth. I'd hope that gets a revisit real soon.
