PBA Bowlers & Ball Sponsorship

I'm just curious mostly at what do you think a professional bowler is paid by a ball manufacturer for yearly sponsorship.

I have no idea, but I do know that a few years back Columbia signed Chris Barnes for 200k.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

Actually Barnes got an 8 year $1,000,000 contract. The highest ball contract ever. These guys may not win a lot on tour but with endorsements the top players are making bank.

Do the ball companies also have to pay the PBA as well?

I believe the companies that register their bowling balls with the PBA for use at the National Tour level pay the PBA an annual fee of appx. $25,000 or more.........could someone explain this is further detail ?

That was with old columbia. When ebonite bought  columbia that contract was voided. As far as I know it never was  announced what the new contract was worth.

The PBA requires a ball company to pay 250k a year to register their balls. That figure came from Mo Pinel so I know that it is accurate

Just in response to the last comment, just because Mo Pinel says it, doesn't necessarily mean its true. He may be correct on this one----but the statement that you know its true because Mo said it, lets just say I know better.

First of all, Chris Barnes did sign a million dollar contract but it is not the highest....it ties the highest. The first professional athlete, in any sport, to sign a million dollar contract was Don Carter with Ebonite.

Secondly, the ball companies are somewhat held hostage by the PBA, as far as registration is concerned, this is why most companies do not have staff members.

As of right now, the highest paid staffers are either Parker Bohn with Brunswick or Chris Barnes with Columbia. And it is not remotely close to what they were getting paid in the mid to late 90's.

And I agree, just because Mo said it does not always make it true.

$250k is not correct.. I'm not sure if I'm at liberty to say the exact amount so I won't, but that roughtly as far off as the $25k guess as well!

This is not true at all...many staff members only make about $30k a year, and others only get a few hundred a month.  If you think more than a very select few are making "bank" you're very much mistaken.

In the 90's Brunswick had a large staff with annual amounts from 25K to 100K. Several of the other companies had similar deals.

TV appearance money was pretty high as well, with some making $30K+ if they were on for 4 games in a show.

Around 2000 most of the manufactures decided they were not getting enough return and then the PBA started charging registration fees for products.

Right now I don't think anybody but Barnes is making 100K and few are probably making 50K.

A few get 10k or less. Most are equipment only deals.

TV money has dropped off considerably as well.

What is going on/wrong with the current PBA?  I read articles about the Microsoft guys and how there was only 1 profitable year since them owning the tour.  What is the deal with that and how are they supposed to fix this thing?

Considering the PBA had a total of 13 tournaments this year not counting the celeb tournament, with 9 or those being in the same place (NV) I think that is a big clue how things are going for the PBA right now. That means where they use to go to several events across the country, to several different cities coast to coast they have cut back a large amount.

As far as sponsor money for the PBA goes I read the post where Mo talked about it and I would take his word for it. Full sponsership was almost $125K per season. Plus equipment that you have to provide and ect.

Here is a link of yearly earnings for the PBA. Top season earnings.

Look at money vs tournaments bowled and you will see why many are having to leave the tour. Much fewer tournaments with less chances to win or cash.

Mo's comments on tour sponsership cost.

"The expenses vs. the benefits is the question. Just Grassroots registration with NO TV eXposure costs a company $45K plus 10 comp balls per week on the Senior Tour. Any registration with TV exposure costs way more."

"Full registration runs in excess of $126K to the PBA. That's per brand, not manufacturer. Doesn't include balls, signing players, incentives, or freight. Registration runs from Sept. 1 'til Aug. 31 with a month grace period to accommodate changes in status."

If you think he is not telling the truth maybe you can find someone from the PBA to comment.
