To Drop or Not to Drop
« on: July 09, 2008, 02:02:24 PM »
I have been thinking of going down to 14lbs just to carry the 9 pin i need the ball to just deflect.  I leave more 9 pins than any other pin.  Last time i had my CATS last time i had it said i got about 6.1 degrees of entry angle.  O and the other day i left a pocket 6 pin the messenger went behing it.

sorry to say but it sounds like your not lined up correctly... these new bowling balls are designed to carry lighter hits then heavier ones.. before dropping a weight, try in practice to hit the pocket lighter.. find the pocket where you think you should be, but move your feet or your eyes to try and miss just a little... (example)say your crashing the pocket standing 15 looking 10.. instead stand 17 and look 8 see how the ball reacts or stand 18 looking 13.. see where the ball reacts.. try to hit the pocket light.. they might not be all pretty but I bet your carry gets better... let me know how it works..

Why would you assume that dropping weight would help?  Have you considered going up in weight?  16 carries better if all other issues stay the same.  Your profile illustrates a bowler that is speed dominant.  If you were to pick up a pound in ball weight it might just slow you down enough to keep the pins lower and thus carry better.

I dropped to 14 a few months ago and I seem to get more 9 pins now.

I had 4 last night in game one and hit flush all 10 frames. One of them got tripped. Game two I had two 9 pins.

Like se7en and his nines, my drop from 16 to 15 have been costing my a few more eight pins (being a lefty), but overall it's been a good move for consistency shot to shot.

Osku, since you have just 0.1 degree from the optimum entry angle, I wouldn't change. You may need just a half board move up or sideways to adjust. Try it. It's cheaper than a new ball.

Leaving the 9 pin on a regular basis generally means you are either hitting with too much angle (trying to hook the ball back from too far outside and creating too much entry angle) or you are hitting a little heavy and catching too much of the headpin.  Or both.  (And if you left a "pocket 6 pin" it really sounds like you're doing both)  Bring your breakpoint a couple boards closer to the headpin and move your feet left accordingly to back off on the amount of angle you need to get back to the pocket and see if your carry improves.

Slower ball speed does not automatically equate to "lower" pins and better carry and will not overcome bad entry angle and/or pocket position. If you can, watch the title match of the 2007 PBA tournament of champions.

I agree with Dan in saying that a pocket six pin on a light hit in conjunction with nine pins on a high pocket hit is indicative of too much entry angle (assuming right-hander).
