Bought My Last Ball

Last night I saw 6 balls seating in the closet just collecting dust and my main 4 balls are @ the bowling center..  Why do we purchase all these balls and are we just that compective to beat one another?  I could understand purchasing balls if PBA and you are bowling allot of tournaments and winning.  Do you have an idea on how much money we have spent on balls and basically they all do the samething..  

The most common phrase - " My balls doesnt have enough hook " - When is it the bowler responsibility to change something in his/her game for the shot...

Maybe I am wrong and maybe the thought of how much money I have really wasted in this sport has pissed me off.  

I dont know anymore...

1) Bowling balls do get worn out over time, you can only extract oil and resurface so much before there's just not much left.
2) Always remember, you don't need to purchase a ton of bowling balls to bowl pretty darn well on 90% of conditions.
3) I don't know about you, but I usually win a jackpot shortly after purchasing a new ball that pays it off, so I never even notice the money I've spent on it!  Heck, buying used DVDs costs me more than buying bowling balls if you factor in the money I make back using those bowling balls.

Watching the PROS on TV .. Barnes has been on for a few times the last month (or so) .. don't think he's ever repeated the ball from week to week .. must be something to this different ball thing!

The DESIRE to win has to be there ..most of us will continue with a ball we are doing well with .. why use a new one if you are being competitive with the current one .. must be something to do with newer stuff!

There are lots of answers to as why the pros use new balls each week.

The biggest is that the ball companies who sponsor them want you to think the new ball was the difference.

Just because you throw a bad series or two with that month old pill doesnt mean it is shot and will not work.

On a house shot a ball should be good for at least a year or two.

My thinking is with cover refreshing and daily cleaning at the lanes after bowling.  If you can't get at least 500 games out of a ball then you need to look at something else to purchase next time.

I agree .. bowling balls can be rolled until they crack .. and then some in some cases! Pulled some old balls off my rack and shot some great series with them .. but some how my Ultra Friction does the job BETTER .. can't explain it .. but it's true!

This past weekend at league I was talking about this same subject.  The guy I was talking with is one of the better bowlers in the league.  He has 2 bowling balls, one for heavier conditions and the other for light to medium conditions.  Both of his bowling balls are over 10 years old.  He said he just can't justify buying a new bowling ball because the ones he has are great.  He says that when he misses the pocket it's because of a mistake HE made and not the balls fault and because of that using a new ball is not going to make his accuracy better.  He admitts that a new ball may give him better carry here and there but not enough to justify buying a new ball.

Now keep in mind the league i'm bowling on is a big money league that uses very difficult patterns through out the season.  The pattern gets changed every 3 to 5 weeks.  

If a bowler is bowling on a THS then I don't see the need to own more than 2 bowling balls.  One for the fresh oil and one for when the lanes break down.  

If you bowl on a league that uses several tough patterns then the need for more equipment is wise.  You can't out bowl a bad ball reaction.  However, do we need to buy 5 or 6 new balls every year?  No! I just don't see the need unless your bowling in the PBA or a ton of tourney's.

I will admitt i'm guilty of blowing money on equipment.  I've bought and sold a ton of bowling balls over the last 6 years.  I don't keep equipment laying around.  I will sell a ball to make room for a new piece.

i think people's reasons are different honestly i have bought about 3 bowling balls this year already. its just something about that new ball smell. i just like experimenting with different equipment and seeing how the ball responds to my game. thats why i love demo days. Hell even the ebonite one was fun. just to be able to see how different balls fit your game is exciting to me. i finally got my dimension to feel right last night at league and couldnt put it down even though it was too dry for the ball. i put about 30 games on my rapid fire the first week i had it. so for some people its about trying new stuff out. honestly its one of the reasons i can't get bored with bowling. I think we are all in some form or fashion looking for that ball that fits our game perfectly. some of us have found it and are still looking for a newly released ball that fits the same way. its just all in good fun for me.

Case in point, last night on my Monday 5 man hdcp league on a medium THS.  

Good bowler who is going to Natl's to bowl this weekend has already shipped his newer equipment out there that he is going to use.

Goes in the basement and pulls out his Storm Dark Thunder and proceeds to shoot 827.

Says to me afterwards "tell me again...why do I keep buying new equipment?"
