PBA Experience League - How to Play the Lanes
« on: May 04, 2011, 12:18:00 PM »
I'm bowling in a PBA Experience league starting next week.  I am a down and in player who throws primarily up the 5-6 board and moves inside as the lanes dry.  I remember seeing some websites that offered advice on how to the play the lane for a stroker but I cannot seem to find the site now.  Do you have a link to any information that could be useful?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

if you go to you tube and search under pba oil patterns, it will bring up the different patterns and give tips on how to play them.
I also am trying the PBA experience league this summer, and started last week and the scorpion stunk me.
I am also a down and in, put i am more of a up 8-10.
good luck, but don't expect to score as well as you might usually score.

There are many vids on youtube, etc, but keep in mind that what they say are nothing more than generalities.  Wear and tear of lanes, the machine, oil, and how accurately(compared to the PBA) it's laid out play a part in it.  The only consistencies regardless of house is that you truly want to play them as straight as possible initially.  Also, the shorter the pattern, the closer to the gutter you want your BP to be.  The longer the pattern, the futher away from the gutter your BP should be.

Watch others in your league who has a style similar to yours and are bowling well...

Straighter is greater.  With your style, I think you should be fine starting out.  It's usually the folks with a lot of hand that really get burned on their first time in the PBA Experience stuff.  One nice thing about the sport stuff as a down-and-in type is that since you're playing the dry on the back part of the lane instead of the wall, angle and carry at the pocket isn't normally a problem.

Just don't be afraid of making big moves when things aren't going well.  Adjustments can tend to be a bit more "ballsy" than just moving in as the lanes break down.

The general advice you find in videos is good for getting an idea of what's going to happen, but it shouldn't always be adhered to.  The ideal area in which to play can vary from house to house and even from pair to pair.  Your own experience will be key - for example, in my first PBA Experience summer league, I averaged maybe 150 through the first half, but then everything "clicked" and I averaged 185 the rest of the way.

Good luck!
