PBA Pattern B
« on: June 25, 2003, 09:18:50 PM »
OK folks, I need your assistance again.  My summer PBA Pattern league will be using Pattern B (43 ft) for three weeks beginning next week.  Anyone with experience on this pattern please give advice on the best way to play the lanes, what type of equipment to use, surface prep., layouts, etc.  The length of the pattern suggests duller, earlier roll balls.

The house has synthetic lanes.  My style would best be described as tweener.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Keith

Here's what the PBA has to say about pattern B:

quote:
Pattern B is the longest of the five patterns, measuring 43 feet of oil. Typical to the length and design, professionals will migrate more towards the center of the lane as the ball normally will not hook back to the pocket if it strays too far outside near the gutter. This pattern usually requires extreme inside angles to get to the pocket after five or six games. The scoring pace is normally high for this pattern.

It's 43 feet, but the oil is run to 33 feet and buffed to 43.

We've used this pattern for the past two weeks.  It seems very playable at the start, and remains playable for the three games we bowl.  If you're a tweener, I think you could play inside or outside, depending on the ball you use and its surface prep.  What you can't do is bank it off the outside boards; if you get it too far outside, it won't make it back.

The bowlers at my local house have been completely fooled by the easy house shot into thinking they're good bowlers.  Everyone with a winter average over 180 (myself included) is struggling on these PBA patterns.  Most of the guys are down 20-30 pins in average.  Great stuff!

Thanks Seadrive!  We have used pattern D (41 ft) for the first three weeks and pattern C (39 ft) for the last four weeks.  PBA Pattern D for 2003-04 is now a 38 foot pattern.  The Senior Pattern D is 41 feet.

The 41 foot pattern proved to be a challenge.  Pattern C ended up being a lot less difficult.  We had a number of high 800 four game sets.  Last week two players had a 268 - 288 match.  I suspect that the scores will come down a bit over the next few weeks.

Anyone else with knowledge of pattern B, please chime in.

Thanks mr845!

The house has been kind enough to put the league pattern on two extra pair of lanes for early arrivals to practice on.  I usually get there in time for one and most often two games of practice before league starts.  I'll try a few different lines and different balls.

Sounds like the shot needs to be played inside and opened up but don't send the ball too far right (I am right handed).

Bob,
I'm in a 24 person Peterson Point singles league.  Only about two guys that are "heavy handed."  With two people per lane for 4 games, the shot won't transition too terribly.  We do change lanes and opponents each game.
