I've tried asking this a couple of times to no avail so I am going to try again. I read that the sport patterns are all about the ratio of oil but not about the total volume.
My question is: Can you have different volumes of oil on the same shot in two different centers?
For instance, center A puts out the Cheetah with the correct ratio of oil left to right but say a lighter volume of oil than center B. Is that the case or do they specify a certain amount of oil that you have to use?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but this isn't an area I am at all familiar with.

I believe they only specify the oil ratio left to right like you said, they really can't specify the total volume because typically each bowling center has it's own characteristics due to the way the oil/strip the lanes, lane surface, etc.

So then this could be another variable when people are confused as to why their PBA shot doesn't play like another's same PBA shot?

I agree with CHawk, the condition of the lane surface itself plays a large part in how the patterns play. How well the lane is stripped is also a huge factor in my experience.
Maintaining the ratios is still the main objective of a sport pattern, but the rules due allow variance in total volume. At 22' there is a minimum requirement of 10 units of oil on the outsides (boards 3-7). There is also a maximum limit of 80 units of oil on the inside boards (L18-R18) also measured at 22'.
So yes, you may see different variations of a pattern from one center to the next based on what volume is chosen.

I've been lucky long enough...now I'd like to get good.

Excellent. This is exactly the type of info I am looking for.
