my speed to rev ratio is out of whack
« on: August 08, 2006, 06:46:52 AM »
ok, so i haven't bowled in over a week, which for me is a long time

today i got to the lanes and it seemed as if every part of my game was back in place, however, no matter what i tried to do, i kept finding my ball going thru the nose.  I mean, i wasn't doing anything differently and i wasn't playing any straighter than i normally do and the lanes were freshly oiled.  The only thing i noticed was that the approach was just a bit tacky, but you could still get a decent slide on them. i just couldn't seem to get the ball to hold.  My rev rate comes much more natural to me than the speed at which i can release the ball off my hand, so i guess i'm regurgitating the age old question, how do i impart more speed on the ball off the hand.  My average speed was 15.5 mph at the pins but it just wasn't enough to keep up with the rev rate of the ball.  The only explanation i can concieve of would be me holding on to the ball a little too long at the bottom of the downswing, but as i watched my ball go down the lane i liked the way it reacted i just wanted to see a little more speed on it, am i alone on this, somebody help

First let me start by saying that the speed shown at the end of the lane indicates the ball is losing too much speed as it travels down the lane and putting more speed might also increase your rev rate. Try to throw the ball smoother through the front and see if that doesn't help the ball retain more speed or lower the rev rate to where it matches the shot better. Just let the ball float off your hand through your target to the breakpoint in otherwords don't grab on it at the bottom of the swing.

If that doesn't work go to a weaker ball.

Let me revise my earlier post, Polish Hammer is right that 15.5 mph at the pins is a good speed, my point, which I failed to make, was that 15.5 mph is the speed at the end of the lane and the speed off his hand is much faster and throwing the ball harder in most cases will increase the rev rate as well because of a faster hand motion and lessening the grip presure at the release point would help get the ball to read the lane a little more predictably.

Sorry for any confusion.
