now that the pba season is over, whats your take on the past seasons shows? what do you think they could do to make it better? i personally don't like how the w.s.o.b. was done on tv. it was lame, no crowd, and all taped shows. i would like to see more tour stops that are all live shows. i also favor the 5 man stepladder finals. announcer wise they need to change it up, someone who has been in bowling for a while. maybe bring back Bo, but we need some better anouncers. anyways whats your take?

I think its time to replace both Randy and Rob Stone. The guy who, along with Chris Barnes, is doing the Queens tonight on ESPN2 (can't recall his name) did some commentary on the streaming and I thought he was excellent. He sounded like he actually knew something about bowling. If we can't get Denny Shriner back then this guy might well be a good replacement for Stone.

Can't think of anyone to replace Randy but he has gotten pretty tiresome with his repititous attempts at humor. His "get some butter for that sweet roll" , "maple moxy", etc. has really gotten old.

By the way, the guys doing the camera work on streaming broadcast at the Queens are at least as good if not better than the "professionals" who do the PBA ESPN broadcasts.

I think that the PBA should take TV out of the equation for now, especially since they have to pay so much money to be on TV. It's about time they face the fact that Bowling is never going to be the kind of sport that Golf is. I would also suggest that the PBA team up with USBC. Rather than trying to spark new interest, they should get more involved with what's left of the already existing bowling community. Reaching out to the people who already love bowling could help the sport grow from within. How would they do this though? No idea lol

I would like to see the "flavor" of the house come through on the broadcast more. I bowl at E.A. Dublin bowl and for the Earl Anthony stop, it might as well have been on the moon. They hide the characteristics of the house to much. What's the point of having a tour if every single place is made to look the same.

And get rid of the "props", no horns! People who don't bowl aren't going to watch anyway, do they want those of us to do watch to stop as well?

1. Drop the WSOB idea and vow never to use it again. It was bad the first year and worse this year. Tape-delayed finals are horrible anyway, but the WSOB was particularly disastrous.

2. The idea of focusing a little more in the house is a good one. I'm not sure how much you can sell a bowling alley as a destination point, but that's a large part of televised golf's charm -- presenting the course in a way that makes other people wish they were there.

3. More people on the telecast. Having three or four bowlers on per week hurts us. Golf shows you 10-15 guys down the stretch, at minimum. So maybe you have the 1 and 2 seeds getting a bye in the first round, then you have a group of 6-8 bowlers competing simultaneously in the first game. Top two finishers get seeded against the 1 and 2 seeds for the second and third games, then the winners of those face each other for the championship in game four. That gets 10 different guys on the telecast each week with only four games bowled, same as a stepladder show. Gives the fans more opportunities to find "their guy" to follow and cheer for.

I'm also leaning toward dumping ESPN and putting it out for bid, maybe ending up on FSN or Versus. But that's not as important as the three points I just listed above.

Stop trying to cater to the casual viewer and general public -- it's a waste of time.

Audiences for televised sports are getting smaller and smaller because of the nature of entertainment today. Things are so fragmented with so many options available. We're never going to see big television rating for bowling again because, simply put, bowling is a niche sport. Niche sports could get larger TV audiences when you had three or four TV channels to watch. People watched bowling decades ago because there was nothing else to watch! So who is left as your primary audience? Bowlers. What do bowlers want to see? Bowling! Keep it simple. I just want to see really, really talented bowlers in action, and I want to see dramatic matches. I think the vast majority of people who are willing to watch professional televised bowling think along those lines as well. The more matches and more bowlers you can put on TV, the better.

I watched the PBA Senior tour finals coverage on Xtra Frame yesterday, and really enjoyed it. They had a simple format, a big crowd (Gotta love the back-and-forth between the tension of silence and the crowd exploding in cheers when WRW got the first 10 strikes in a 287 game or the collective "OOOH!" when Ron Mohr whiffed a 5 pin), and lots of bowling. That's it. But that's all I need. No gimmicks, just bowling.

Have a 4 or 5 man step ladder event with Carolyn Dorin Ballard and Marshall Holman doing the commentary. Maybe have a third that rotates out with the two Like Bo Burton or Mike Durbin.

I would go for some different formats, but for watching on TV two man head to head match play is the most compelling.

I also don't like the talking with the bowlers while they are bowling.

+1 to all of that, maybe even add "Baldo" (CDB's husband) to the mix, he has excellent skills.

Take away the exempt field is the first thing. Open up the tournaments to everyone like the good old days and maybe raise the entry fee but everyone is bowling in the tournament proper, even the amateurs. Raise entering average for amateurs to 210 or maybe 215 to enter to get the better bowlers to bowl.

Travel to different points of country instead of staying in one part, Vegas. Hence, West coast for 3-4 stops, Southwest for 3-4 stops, South for 3-4 stops, Southeast for 3-4 stops, Mid-East 3-4 stops, Northeast for 3-4 stops and Midwest for 3-4 stops. One of the coolest part of the old PBA wasgoing to watch the pros come to town and actually see them in person. This year, only if you lived in Vegas or reasonable driving distsnce to Vegas you could see Duke, Walter, Tommy, etc. I miss the pro-ams now and now that i have kids, i wish they could bowl with the pros.

Telecast needs to change. Telecast needs to be more technical and on top of things as the bowlers are changing things. I know a few times, Randy said 'looks like a ball change' and actually they didnt change anything just adjusted on the lane. There needs to be more in depth interviews with the bowlers and bowling companies on upcoming products or current products. Maybe a segment on different drill patterns and how they can effect your game. Maybe like a weekly tip, average improver with a touring pro demonstrating. Like the good ol days.

PBA needs to do better marketing and make the tour more appealing to get bigger sponsors instead of increasing ball companies fees and weed out the smaller companies. Id like to see smaller companies and amateurs on TV. Its appealing and different instead of every week saying oh Scroggins up 10, or its Walter up 10 with the red ball.

Just some of my opinions so please dont grill me too much.

I know this is sad to say, but how many times do people have to give their input to the pba before they do something. You ever notice how they don't even ask their fans what they would like to see?

Couldn't agree more, Dan. People who watch drag boats are drag boat fans. Other people can't understand it and they won't watch it if they don't love it. Same with a bunch of other sports. Put a bowling show on for bowlers. I've said for years that bowling is getting closer and closer to being a niche sport. It will always be a popular mainstream game.

And, please. Enough of the lame comparisons to golf. Apples and oranges. Always has been and always will be.

Ok first off, Get announcers who know about bowling, not people who have to be taught as they go. I heard yesterday on ustream someone call a 4bagger a "grandslam" really?

I agree the WSOB is garbage. its too much bowling all at once which is why I think we saw a wide variety of new bowlers. Those with the higher skill levels im sure get tired. We want the best bowlers at the top of their game, not a step or 2 below.

Also, Letting the hosting bowling alley shine, its like every stop is the freakin same. Let the ball return be the ball return not a billboard.

I personally think bowlers need to be more animated and excited when they bowl. Only bowler I can think of who was animated when they bowled was TJ, no surprise there. I miss the patrick allen moments, or sean rash Yeah baby moments. not jus throw a ball, sit down. Dont you want to show emotion? IMO

I think they should talk more about ball layouts with what the pros are using, maybe give an insite to the PAP they have in such a way that we can relate.

And last, stop trying to attract the non-bowler, if they arent into bowling now, odds are they never will be. Keep the bowlers who love the sport for what it is, without us you have nothing.

Get rid of the nonsense tournaments. It looks like a bunch of guys just bowling for no reason. The Six Flags things are bad. The average bowler has no clue about PBA patterns.

I would like to see team bowling. Each city have a team and play like other sports do.

To me the answer is simple. Take a copy of last night's USBC Queens and pair Randy Pedersen with whoever did the play-by-play last night.

Rob Stone can become a popcorn vendor at some Division III football game for all I care and while Chris Barnes was good, his voice at times reminds of Kermit the Frog.
