Hey guys, 

I bowl in a mens league, and there isn't a lot going on in terms of Side Pots and Brackets, I would like to change that for next season. 

So I want to start running some brackets and pots (ideally multiple brackets), controlling the formation of brackets, is best done with software. 

Software I don't want to commit to purchasing if this isn't going to take (our league is notoriously cheap). 

so, does anyone know of any free software I may be able to utilize? I was even looking at creating my own but that is a massive undertaking I would rather avoid.... 

anyone able to help out??

Just do them by hand first.  Make a bracket with a spreadsheet and 8 numbered spots to fill in with names below each bracket.  As people pay, put their name in the numbered spots below the bracket.  Once filled, use some billiard pill balls (1-8) as a random number generator.  The first pill number out, put that person 1, then the second pill number will be 2...... etc.   Very simple and if it looks like people want to continue the brackets, then perhaps purchase the program.

Just make sure your method is random....I used to bowl in a league where brackets were run by hand.  The lady used poker chips with numbers on the back.  She would put out 40 or so and when you paid you chose which bracket and then the poker chip you wanted.

I would agree with Russell.  If you are not going to use a computer, then having the person draw a number for the spot in the bracket is the best way.  We used to use cards numbered 1 - 48.  We always filled 6 brackets.  Once the person paid, they would pick the number of cards they paid for and get put into the bracket in that spot.  Just number your brackets the same way.

 

It truly eliminates any issues.  The only thing you would need to stay away from is having people pick for other people.  The person bowling needs to be the person paying.  Otherwise, you may run into some issues.  I can explain if you want.


Who needs a 300 or 800, when I have a 294 and a 295!?!?!

Freebie:  can handle up to 32 players/teams, single or double elimination, seeded or random placement.
 
 
Note: it will only create the initial bracket for you - you will have to manually advance the players, so basically it's only good for giving you a starting point....in which case you would probably be better off just printing out an empty bracket and having your players randomly choose a number as described earlier.
 
Personally, I like the poker chip with numbers idea, coupled with the random bracket generator....kind of a double random seeding.

I think Braxion lets you download their software for free and run a few brackets (maybe up to 4) for no charge.  To go beyond that requires the full license which is around $150 I believe.  Check their website if you are interested.
 
I use their full license version and like it.

I agree-do them by hand at first. Be sure to charge for your efforts, normal fee is 1/8th of the money (one spot in bracket). If it goes well you can save up the money and buy a program. Just make sure you are as up front as possible when drawing the spots. Until you can get a program just limit the number of brackets each night, when they are full thats it.

What about a high game payout?
 
I was in a league a few years ago that did that.  Basically you paid $5 (maybe it was $10) to get in.  After the first game they eliminated the bottom 1/3, then the 2nd game they eliminate the bottom 1/2, then 3rd game they pay the top 3. 
 
High score from each game would get their money back, even if you were already eliminated in the previous round.
 
That always seemed to have a higher participation than the brackets - you always seem to have those guys that are good for 1 high game a night, so they figure they have a chance of at least getting their money back.
