PBA Skills shot
« on: January 24, 2005, 02:30:36 AM »
What did everyone thing of the PBA Skills shot, where they had to hit a pin at about 40 feet, carry the 7 pin on the left lane and have the pin from 40 feet cross over and carry a 10 pin on the right lane.

I thought that was incredible.  Thats the sort of stuff I was hoping we would see on the skills challenge.  Bring back the old Veripappa videos!

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

I wonder how long it took them to make it.  I know they didn't make those on their first attempt.

I'm pretty sure that it was both of their 1st attempts.  That was some cool stuff!

I disagree.  Has anyone seen it?  I'd bet money that not all of those shots are done on the first try.

This was from the PBA site.

quote:
Each bowler has 6 shots that they name, plus a "specialty shot" that they can use once at anytime per round. They have an audience member draw a number from 1 to six to see what shot they have to do, until they go through all 6 once.

To determine who starts, they spin a pin and whoever the head of the pin points to, starts. It goes that way until the starting bowler misses, in which case the other bowler gets a number drawn and they start that shot first.

And yes, the skills shot matches are highly edited down, as each match can go on forever until one bowler gets the 3 X's (there were a couple that I watched that lasted nearly an hour.) So unfortunetly, you usually don't get to see some of the best shots that either the starting bowler missed, or both made.

The whole round of 8 was filmed at Medford, so it will be interesting to see what they decide to show.

Yeah but Hose, once Barnes made that shot, Reyes had to make it on the next shot, or it's a strike for Barnes.  You don't get 14 tries to make a shot that your opponent has already made.

That two-lane shot that Barnes set up is the kind of stuff they need to do, if you really want people to watch a skills shot segment.  The one-step strike shot, that Reyes has now used twice on the show, while not as easy as it looks, is visually unappealing.  You could make that shot all day long, and no one would care.

Haven't seen a shot yet that Varipappa didn't do and do better.

I think it's set up like the game of "Horse" in basketball.  If you miss and the other person misses, nothing changes.  If I hit, you must or I get a strike.

To me, it's kind of like Ashlee Simpson singing...those guy are not making those shots on the first try just like AS can't sing.

Hose, did you watch the event?  I am pretty sure Barnes said right before he went that this was the 1st time he had ever tried it.

I attended the taping of one of the earlier rounds of the PBA Skills Challenge, and this is what I observed.  The player who starts gets an attempt at his shot.  If he makes it, the other player has to come up and make it on the first try.  If the first player misses his shot, the second player gets to attempt a shot of his choosing.  If that player misses his shot, the first player has the choice of choosing a new shot or making one more attempt at making the shot he attempted and missed previously.  If he misses on the second attempt, he doesn't get any more attempts at the same shot after that.

guz - I enjoyed the shot you mentioned.  It is one of my favorites of the competition so far.
