How to get out of a slump?
« on: November 05, 2008, 05:11:53 AM »
I am looking for suggestions or superstitions how to get out of a slump?  I am a decent player average 220+ on house shots.  I practice 10+ games a week and bowl 2 leagues with occasional tournaments.  I just cant get out of a slump. To up and down please make your opinion because EVERYONE on this site has gone through this every year! Don't lie to yourself!

Personally I never get into a slump, but that's because I am good, just ask me.

However, if I were to ever have that happen, I would go practice with a urethane ball, forcing myself to get back into good form habits.

My game is all form, so that's what would work for me, if I was slumping.  Highly unlikely, because I am just that good.

In all seriousness though, that's what I do.  Sometimes I lose sight of what I need to do physically in my game, because the technology made me lazy.  As soon as I get back to having my good form back, my score go up.

You could try that, but I'm not sure it would work for everyone?

Those who do not ask questions are the lame ones.  Everyone and I mean everyone goes into a slump every now and again.  Practice does make "perfect". It took me a month to get out of a slump I was in. Well the slump was more during league than practice.  I started leaving corner pins or just not hitting the pocket consistently or maybe timing.  I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong.  I would go practice on the weekends and nothing wrong. My release was great, carry was great, timing felt right.  But, things are a little different when you practice by yourself and when you bowl league with 10 people to a pair of lanes.

My issues ended up being not making the correct adjustments and not making them soon enough. That caused me to try to throw the ball faster, which threw off my timing.  So even though you don't think practice is helping. it is.

That's IMHO a good suggestion, and taking a step back or having a break can also help, since one becomes unconsciously more and more result-conscious, the game becomes more and more stiff, and a downward spiral sets in.

Going back to basics and checking if the foundations are sound (e .g. with a urethane - I also have an old Blue Hammer which is a great training tool!) is a very good diagnosis step, just to see if there is a real physical flaw, and/or something that pushes you from the back of your mind.

Sometimes a couple of weeks off does wonders, you come back with a fresh attitude and are more aware of what your doing, which allows you to address the issue leading to your slump.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I agree.  The harder you try, the worse you do.  Take some time off.  If you still want to bowl your leagues that week, that's fine, but definately don't go practice during the week.  It's a good way to get back to basics.  If you start trying to fix things that aren't really problems normally, you just end up developing new bad habits, etc.

I usually take some time off and when I do bowl during this time I try to ignore the specific fundamentals and simply let it happen. If this persists, then I refocus on fundaments starting from the basics, foot work, pushaway, grip, slide, finish position, arm swing...etc.

I agree with the comments about taking a little break, every year about this time my game falls off with the extra hours at work this time of year.  I have found that if I take a week or two away and come back that I am executing better and not trying to force the ball.

Third on the slump buster...go to a bar, sport a 300 ring and a snickers bar and play it from there, moped it.
