PBAX
« on: May 12, 2010, 02:28:38 AM »
Just had my first run in with the shark pattern.  This is my first experience on PBA patterns.  To say the least it is an eye opening experience.  Only shot a 505 on the first go round.  I only have 2 balls currently that I can take each night and both are pretty similar.  I have the Bedlam and Total Bedlam and both are set up skid/flip.  My first reaction to the shark is that the skid/flip is entirely to long.  Any suggestions on a ball type and layout.  I have been eyeing some of the Motiv equipment.  I guess my bowling styling is tweener with slower ball speed (14mph) with avg. revs>

The shark pattern is a tough on but one of my favorites. The way to play this shot is similar to the Chameleon. Anything outside 10 and your SOL, anything inside 15 and your going nose or worse.

At the house I bowl at the lanes are 3-4 years old and are starting to develop a worn track area. To play the shark you have to play deeper then you normally would from the THS. I normally find myself playing 3rd arrow getting the ball to 12-10 board at the break point. I''m a power stroker. Used to be a cranker type of bowler but in the last 5 years my style has changed by choise.

As the pattern breaks down you''ll want to move your feet left 1st. Next adjustment can be 1 or more things. It''s not surprising to make a ball change to a weaker ball, move left with the feet and make an adjustment on the lane as well.

Learning which adjustment to make is what makes the PBA patterns so hard to bowl on once the pattern starts to break down. All I can really say is, goto youtube and search out the shark pattern videos and watch as many as you can find. Watch the bowler that is closest to your speed and revs and where they are playing the lanes.

For most of you hacker bowlers here, ball reaction will mean nothing on this condition. Most of you can not make good enough shots to hit the pocket more than a couple times a game on the Shark pattern. You guys should focus on making spares on this difficult condition. You should use your plastic ball for all spares.

Imake, I was reviewing my notes from the other night and definitely noticed I missed some easy spares.  I think overall I missed 5 makeable spares.  I think I left 5 or 6 splits of which I converted 1.  Not that it is some astonshing find but I definitely realize that spare shooting is key on these PBA patterns since you can't count on stringing a bunch of strikes together.
