Pearl particle - phasing out?
« on: November 29, 2008, 11:36:42 AM »
I was talking to my driller and they told me that they thought we wouldn't see too many particle pearl ball anymore.  This saddens me because I think they are my favorite type of coverstock.

I haven't paid too much attention to the latest trends but looking around the shop it seems like there aren't any new particle pearls in the new crop of balls.

I feel particle pearls are my favorite type of coverstock too but lucky for me I saved a few in times of need.

Well, while there may be a few less balls labelled "particle pearl", I wonder if there will really be a reduction in them. I say this because there are a LOT less balls being labelled "particle" but we seem to be learning 6, 12 or 18 months after a ball is released that it has particles in it, but the company chose NOT to label these balls as such. So much for truth in advertising ....

There's a new 900 global ball that is pearl particle... don't remember the name, but the ball is grey/silver/blackish

The Break S75?
I think it's supposed to be a solid/pearl combination. I don't recall there being any particles in it. It does use the Soaker technology.

It seems to me that particle pearl has been replaced with hybrid coverstocks. A solid/pearl mix makes a little more friction in the oil than straight pearl. I hope PP never goes away as well. I love my Depth Charge and Gold Nugget.

I hope they don't go away, because I've yet to be able to figure out hybrid coverstocks. I've had two balls now with hybrid coverstocks (Roto Grip Silver Streak SE, Roto Grip Epic Saga) and have failed miserably with both. I just acquired a Storm Power Agent and will try working with it. I've tried multiple drillings, surface preps -- it doesn't seem to matter.

Particle pearl balls to me are some of the best equipment out there. Clean enough through the fronts but with a powerful arc shape. It will be a big loss for me if they ever went away.

Jess,

Don't give up too easily. I know it can be trying. Realize that the Storm factory puts quite a high gloss shine on all their polished balls, much like COlumbia used to do in the mid-late 1990s. Bob Summerville, late publisher of BTM, used to urge people to sand these polished balls to around 600 grit (US) and then re-apply a new coat of polish, but in a lighter manner.  This was to give them a better chance to grip the lanes slightly earlier rather than to skid/flip.

Another method is to remove some of that gloss with a nylon pad, lightly, by hand. This kind of hazes that shine. It makes the ball read the lane a little more evenly and slightly earlier. Worth experimenting on/with.

The SS SE and the Saga are too especially skid/flip balls, particularly if your release encourages that ball reaction.

I've never thrown a pearl particle, but with that said I've been thinking about trying out the Shift.

Particle Pearls are great for smoothing out over/under of league conditions and on fresh conditions where the back ends are snappy. Scuff them and stay left on the puddle longer. Shine them and migrate to the oil line and tug/fade them right up that spot for a couple of games.

The Shift is the one exception to this as you can go away from the pocket with it and get it back pretty angular, sometimes a little too angular.

I would think Storm or RG would keep one in there overall ball line. It might be on one of there lower end releases as these are tough sellers in the premium pricing slots like the "stand left, throw right" hook monsters. A T-Road particle would be awesome as would something in the Fire line since the Pyro was a 'must have' when it came out.

I like particle pearls for my speed to have one in the bag is a given (even though I don't right now)

i don't think they will go out completly though. to much interest and sucess with them look at the Revs from MoRich that sold great and everyone loves them I wish I still had mine.

We don't all have 400+ revs, some of us are quite speed dominant and strong covers are the only real choices we have if we want the ball to hook.
