As Sawbones says, your teammate probably got caught on the emotional downslide after the 299. My one and only 299 game was followed by a 150-something. It happens very often.
The other thing that's very typical, though, is that the shot changes, and the bowler either doesn't know how to adjust, or can't carry with the only ball he has.
I bowled head-to-head against a guy last week who bowled a 170 - 276 - 169 = 615. The 1st game he was mostly light. The 2nd game, he hit the pocket on every shot and carried everything. The 3rd game, he was in the pocket, but lost his carry. He used the same ball all night, a polished Monster Frenzy.
Analysis:
1st game, fresh oil: ball skidded too far, never got into a good roll.
2nd game, track starts to dry a little: right amount of friction to get ball into a good roll.
3rd game: carrydown prevents polished ball from finishing, too much deflection results in beacoup 10 pins.
Guy basically stayed in same spot, threw ball the same way all night. Bad score, great score, bad score.
Just another aspect of the modern game of bowling.
