Title: Perfect entry angle
Post by: intergalactic on July 16, 2004, 07:57:07 AM
What's the perfect entry angle?

11 degrees is it?

I think studies have shown that it's more important WHERE the ball IS when it hits the pocket.  For a right hander, I think it's the 17.5 board.

Can someone else confirm?

Why does it matter what style you have?

cuz more revs or less revs, and ball weight, and side roll or forward roll determine how the pins will move.

I wish I could find the study that proved it was where the ball was located at initial impact that generated the highest percentage of strikes.

My thought on this is not to suggest an opinion without some research.  Saying ball revs has in influence on strike percentage is silly to me... without proof.  The 6 degree angle of entry has been studied more than once, however those balls were on a ramp (for consistency).

Yea they rolled a 16 pound ball of a 9 1/2 foot ramp at aprox. 17 mph, I believe 2 1/2 inches off the head pin for a "perfect strike"

I have this on my site somewhere.

I remember magic carpet said something about how 6º wasnt the real number, because he did his own testing and got a different number.

But according to ABC, yes, its 6º

Why does it matter if it has side roll or forward roll when it hits the pins as long as it is good angle?

Bamaster is right about the 17.5 board.  I attended a 3 day class with Fred Borden coach of Team USA and Don Moyer and also Rachel Perez was there, this was a couple years ago.  Fred mentioned in our class discussions that the 17.5 board needs to be hit for the "perfect strike".

So if 6 degrees isn't the best angle for everyone couldn't there be a style where 6 degrees would suck?

Basically it comes down to a few factors. If someone has a slow ball speed/throws light equipment, more entry angle and higher hits are required. Someone who throws fast, or heavy equipment doesnt need as much. At least that makes sense to me.
