Petersen Tournament
« on: June 02, 2012, 03:53:06 PM »
A big thanks to Joe Stransky for letting a local boy like me to bowl with his group of "outsiders".  We had fun!

Shot a crappy 1234, but did convert the 7-9-10 split along the way.

For those who don't know, the famous Petersen Tournament outside Chicago features the world's most difficult playing conditions:

No practice shots
No re-racks
No dots or arrows for targeting
Each lane has a VERY different pattern on it. (wed/dry/spotty/inverted/reverse)
Some pins are warped and are mis-matched weights
Some racks feature pins set WAY off spot
Banners hang from the ceiling so you can't see the pins when you throw the ball

Average 190 in this, and you likely cash for almost $1000 at the end.

I've seen first timers shoot 100-110 for their first two and then pack their stuff & leave angrily.  LOL!   >:(

A must do at least one time in a bowlers life.

Wow, do people really take this tournament that seriously? It sounds like a blast, in the sense that you'll experience a lot of laughs and that you shouldn't get too upset over the results if they don't go your way. Sure, $90 might be a lot for some people to spend for some laughs, but I can't imagine anyone taking this tournament so seriously that they'd just walk out in anger. Those people need to lighten up OR get a clue about the intended weirdness of the tournament.

I have been going to the Peterson for over 10 years I have a great time. My group has been going for about 20. Every year we try and bring a newbie . I always get a kick out of the new guy  he thinks because he has 220 + Ave he is going to win it. I win more money betting the new guy he will not break 1400, then in the tournament they all take the bet.  Our newbie shot 1050 this year with only 1 game over 140 and a 94. He was talking to himself by the 3rd game.  This year is the last year for the 2 ball max. I Bring a spare ball and a Pin in Pap layout no need for anything else for me. On some lanes the spare ball will hook out of the house. One year left lane it felt like 60 ft of oil and the right no oil for the 1st 20 feet. It can be fun. Do not expect to shoot good. Then if you do  it's more fun.

Try it you will get hooked, I did

When I was a kid, I used to go bowl a bunch of games on the "upper level" while Dad was bowling his squad. I bowled it a few times when I was still within driving distance...but I don't think I'll be taking a flight to attend, though!

And now for the incriminating evidence:

This tournament isn't for everyone.
Can be very frustrating but also very entertaining at the same time.
Everyone within a 4 hr drive should at least try it once.
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO

Tournaments like the Petersen are more about luck and perserverance than skill.  If you are a good shooter with the right attitude, the odds are still better than the crap tables, but some of the same elements apply.

Overall, that's probably the best thing to do if you want to score well.  But you need to throw REALLY hard to overcome some of the lanes.   Obvious reverse blocks on some lanes.  Any side turn even with plastic, and the ball goes "bye-bye!"

However, I was told that there are 2 of the 16 lanes with they place the house shot down on.  Won't help much knowing which ones they are because the racks are so bad!   ??? >:( ???

Last year I played off the right corner firing it at the head pin with either my Headhunter or Favorite. Depending upon the amount of oil on the lane. Shot 1535 for 29th place and a nice payday. Just tried to tickle the head pin on either side and make my spares.

p.s.
I am left handed........lol

The Petersen is the TRUEST test of real bowling there is, period!  The reason is quite simple...bowling is a game where the goal is to knock down as many pins as possible.

That is the REAL goal of bowling, knocking down as many pins as possible.  It is not about what line can you play, how much you rev it, how hard you throw it, what ball you throw, or what hand you throw it with.

Also, actually COMPETING at the Petersen takes quite a bit of skill.  A plastic ball will just as easily hook off the lane as any other ball, depending on the lane condition...and throwing it hard doesn't mean it won't hook either.  To throw is straight on some of those lanes is a skill.  Trying to find a way to throw a strike on 60ft of oil with an off-set rack?  Sure anyone can get lucky once, but if you shoot over 200 there...that is skill.

In many ways the Petersen reduces bowling to its main, simple goal...knock down 10 pins.  Almost all of the other variables that most bowlers gripe about are taken away.  Those that "get it" love this tournament.  Those that don't, bitch and moan...kind of like bowling in most any other league/tournament.

Bowled this almost 30 years ago in the original place 2nd floor on Archer (above an old Ace hardware?) in the Andy Sebasek supersquads ($300+ some odd dollars to get in), shoot a 210-220 for about $500 in each pot...lol  Remember walking up the old decrepitated stairs with that huge suitcase double bag...just a omen of what was to come...haha  Tough...very very tough but lots of fun.  Still remember running out the 4-5-7-10...twice...lol

One lane flooded, one lane bone dry...had one lane skid, hook, skid and hook again..saw a candlepin in the rack, very interesting to say the least...but it was just classic Petersen.

This sounds like an amazing tournament. What do you need to compete? Just $90 bucks and balls?

Chicago was one heck of a bowling city back in the day.   Bowling centers everywhere in the city.  I think at one time there were 100+ bowling centers most over 8+ lanes, in a wide variety of interesting places and locations.

There are less than 20 left now.
