Peterson Arsenal
« on: July 28, 2004, 07:47:08 PM »
Well it is confirmed that Thong Princess, Pin kisser and I will be bowling the Peterson On Friday, August 6th at 6:30 pm.

I want to know what I should bring.  I am going to only bring two balls one of which is my plastic and the other is a urethane.

My question is what urethane to bring?  I have a black turbo, red hammer, purple hammer and a black phantom.

I will probably bring the black turbo.

What do you think?

As a side note.  What is the best line to play?

Doc,
If what I hear about the Peterson is true......it doesn't matter........

What line? straight at the headpin!

Everything you know about bowling DOES NOT COUNT at this tourney, so forget it and just try to knock down pins!

Good luck and report back!

Take whatever equipment you are most comfortable throwing.

Straighter is most definately greater

Jeffrevs - I hear that the tournament is out there and I have heard some great stories of a few of the bowlers in my area and from this board.  I know it's a  matter of knocking down wood.  Just wonderign which is the best way to go about it?

I can throw the ball straight and I was wondering if pointing it off the ditch, throwing cross lane, or throwing brooklyn may be the way to go?  It is going to be a spare shoot fest and hopefully I won't get a lot of splits or washouts.

I hear that if you leave the lilly no one laughs.  It should be fun event I don't expect to win it.  I hear you have to do it once in your life just for the experience.

The tourny runs from April to September and it's an 8 gamer and to date the highest scratch score is 1,572.  That's 196 average.  Hahahaha I will be lucky to shoot 1000.

i bowled in it in june and straighter is definitely the best way to go. its an experience of a lifetime. every lane is different with some racks you get a half normal front three and with others youll see the headpin almost in front of the two or three pin.
when we bowled in it lanes two three and four were absolute toast with any hand movement the ball was in the left gutter. on lane seven the heads were stripped and the backends were flooded. it was pretty interesting seeing the ball turn left and then go dead straight.
i was listening to a couple of the guys writing in the scores talk and they were laughing about a pin in the rack on one of the lanes weighing ten pounds or more. the racks all have different variations of weighted wood in them its nothing to hit the pcket and see a four six or eight ten split.

Maybe you should try the "hellicopter ball of doom!"  LMAO seemed to have great success with it!  I've heard this release gets pretty good pin action - that might be a bonus... Just a thought - I've never bowled the Peterson though, so I have no experience to offer, just theories. Good luck!

I'd definitely take plastic and urethane.
Probably the Black Turbo.
Straighter is greater at the Pete.
Your goal should be to try and hit the headpin everytime no matter which side you hit.
I'd take along a camera and try ands capture the atmosphere of the place.

free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO

By all means, try to point the ball on lane 1.    There is one pair that is a dead wall where the Turbo might have some use.  You really think of the Pete more like miniature golf and less like bowling.  It is the only way to keep your sanity when bowling.

As far as pointing, brooklyn, cross lane, etc... you really need to change strategy depending on the rack you get.

Doc,
I think the Black Turbo is a good idea.  I personally keep my urethane dull and my plastic highly polished when I go to the Pete.

I would add a few pieces of advice to what everyone else has posted so far.  First, be prepared with a backup plan - i.e.  when you have no reaction on a lane, start headhunting, going straight at 'em.  You can go from either the left corner or the right corner, whichever is more comfortable for you.  However, you'll find that you actually have a "playable" reaction on some lanes (not necessarily a pair of lanes).  Last year, on 15-16, I had a hook-stop-hook reaction with my plastic ball on 16, but nothing on 15, so I was hooking  plastic on 16 and headhunting on 15.  BTW, I ended up shooting 220 on that pair, which was high for the pair that squad (second was 208), earning me $100 (our squad has pots).

Another bit of advice I'd offer is to keep a close eye on the people bowling on the pair next to you, so you can read the pair to some extent before bowling on it.

You are not allowed to take your bowling bag into the tournament area.  You may take in an accessory case/pouch, if you so desire.  You are also not allowed any food or drink in the tournament area.  You are given a short (roughly 15 minutes) break after the third game, during which you may grab a quick drink or take a bathroom break, or whatever.  There is another such break after the sixth game.  They will also announce the squad leaders during these breaks, so you will have an idea where you stand.

One more thing.  You get no practice on the lanes before starting.  If you have time, and there are lanes (outside the Petersen section) available, get one and throw a practice game or share one with someone else, just to get loose.  If you are only bringing the two balls, you may not be able to do this, because once you check in your two balls, they are sent in to the tournament lanes by way of a shopping cart and the ball returns, and you won't see them again until you are ready to start tournament play.

As I mentioned to TP, I'll be stopping by Hoffman Lanes for the start of your squad to say hello to all of you BR folks.

Good luck!

Sorry Twister if I led you astray.  I probably didn't give the date Rick is correct that will be next Thursday.  I'm still here in CA.  I leave for Chicago Wednesday, the day after Summer School ends

I am looking forward to seeing everyone and bowling the Pete.  I'm taking my Blue Hammer, my only urethane ball and plastic.

The last 4 years I've cashed throwing and I do mean throwing a green Manhattan Rubber very straight end over end roll.  Get as close to 16 lber. that you can find unless you don't have the strength to roll that many games.  On a few pairs lined up off the corner at the 1-3 and some the same thing on the left side at the 1-2.  Had a 5 bagger last year and guys I was bowling with got ticked cuz they thought we'd get moved to the pair of death.
