Peterson point system?

Can someone please explain it to me. I'm thinking of joining a 4 game league that uses it, and have no clue how it works.

It's really pretty easy. You're bowling against the opponent across from you on the score sheet and team points as well. Some are scratch and others use handicap which makes the matchups more interesting. Money is paid on total points won.

Typical Peterson scoring will have 1 point for beating the guy directly opposite you (total of 3 points per man per night possible, so 15 for a five man team); 2 points for the team winning total pins per game, so 6 game points possible for a total of 21 points.  Some also give points for winning team totals for 3 games.

Sounds like a fun and competitive system. I am definitely joining! This league's HDCP is 90% of 210. At least I get some sticks.

Peterson point system is only useful in a scratch format IMO.  How would you like to shoot 250 and lose to someone that shoots 218 and is getting 40 pins?

I haven't noticed any of you posting the peterson pinfall point system.  

We used to use it in an individual scratch league.  

For every 50 pins you get 1 pt.  Shoot 250  Get 5 pts.   Win your match get 1 pt.  Pinfall carries over and may get you an extra point at nights end.  

Total of 28 pts possible in a 4 game night.

There is no difference when applying that to team games in normal point systems.  One guy shoots 250, the rest are average (200-210 handicap).  Everyone on the other team bowls 15 pins over their average and they win.

The guy that shoots 218 with 40 pins of handicap is probably about 50 or 60 pins over his average.  When you shoot 250, are you 50 or 60 pins over your average?  That's what handicap is for.

I understand some people don't like handicaps because it's abused by lying, rotten, cheating, no-good, poopyhead sandbaggers, but when averages are honest, what's the problem?

I bowled in a Peterson league that was like Anotherwindup mentioned.  We bowled four games scratch.  The first two games were position round then you changed lanes for the second two game set on the regular schedule.  We used the point for every 50 pins system, one point for winning your game against the bowler on the scorer on the opposite side, plus a point for winning the game and final point for total pins.

This was a great league because the left hand team had to put their line up in first and could not change it once you put your line up in.  That way you could try and match up and win all the points or if you know they had a bowler that was extremely hot you might throw that game away and put your lowest average bowler against him or her and hope that he can manage a point or two.  But you would hope to take a majority of the points by matching your best scrorer against their second highest bowler and so on.  It took some managing of averaging and knowing the bowlers in the league.

It was by far my favorite league.

I would have to say the best 5 person team league in Sioux Falls uses the Peterson point system. If I recall it uses a 30 point system though. Bowling in that league and in leagues that use the regular 4 point system I would much rather bowl in the Peterson Point league. Not for sure what it is makes everything seem more competitive. As far as DP3 saying it is most usefull in scratch leagues I disagree. Just like the regular 4 point system you still have to give the lower average person a chance. It is no difference if you loose in either point system. For exactly how that league works best thing to do is to talk to someone in the league.
