It really depends on the layout you want to use and your span.
For example lets say you have a cut to cut span of 4" and use inserts that means that to have the pin be above the fingers and still keep the CG on or below the midline you are going to need at least a 3" pin. Now lets say you want a pin under and want the CG to end on or above the midline you are going to need a pin that is under 2". The CG doesn't matter other than statics so you can get by with something close but this is the best way I know to explain pin distance.
Top weight is determined by whether you want a balance hole or not and how big you want it to be. If you wanted to swing the CG out a good ways but didn't want a balance hole you would want a low top weight. On the other hand you may want a large balance hole with the same placement then you would want a high top weight.
