38' Pattern, how to prepare....nothing else known
« on: September 19, 2017, 09:09:37 AM »
Good morning everyone,

Hoping y'all can help me with this....I'm in a tournament this coming weekend and we aren't being told what the pattern will be, only that it's 38'.

I have a ton of equipment, some undrilled. How would you prepare for this?

Thank you!

What lane surface will you be on (high or lower friction)?

Know your benchmark ball and several new sanding pads to change surfaces as needed.

A friend who can do that for you while you warm up would probably help.

I believe the lanes are wood - they hook more then my home house and my home house is synthetic.

I would definitely bring a few different shapes for the fresh and obviously your burn ball.

Good luck!

There's no way to know, so just have multiple options. I bowled a tournament on New Years that was 35' and a lot of people mainly brought urethane with a couple other balls and urethane was not playable because of the volume and slick lane surface.

Dont have a set bias, you have to play what's put out not what you're told

Your first priority should be to figure out where to play the lanes, not what ball or surface you need to use.  This will depend on a bit on your style.  At 38 feet I would first try to play them out between 4 and 8 board.  If they are really hooking out there, then tame down and see if you can find something that will hold a little bit.  Also check you swing area out.  If they are hooking when you square up, but hanging when you go away from the pocket, then you may need to take everything in, so you can bring your break point in a bit.  Team event in nationals was 38 feet, and most people had the best luck outside 10 board.

common sense tells me that the shot will be outside the track ...... but you never can be sure.  It depends a lot on you.  Can you go straighter with more speed?

I bowled in a  gig that announced a 38-foot pattern and if memory serves me. orrect, these were the pieces I used. (One thing I must add is I went in with the mindset I needed to make a LOT of spares, which proved to be correct).

Radical Reax Gusto (pin down)
Brunswick Ringer Solid (pin down)
Brunswick Platinum Ringer (pin down)
Track Sensor II (pin down)
Brunswick Ringer Pearl (pin up)
Brunswick Avalanche (pin up)
Brunswick Slingshot (pin up)
Columbia black U-dot (spare)

I bowled 12 games that day, winning the gig. Last ball used was the Track Sensor II. I began with my break point around the 8-board.. Ended with break point out to the 14-board.
Ball speed avg. (18.25 mph)
Rev rate avg. (400-428 rpm)
