Pin placement and top weight?
« on: October 03, 2003, 12:28:56 AM »
I'm going to be buying a new bowling ball eventually, and was curious about pin placement and top weight.

I'm basically just a stroker, however I'm wanting to become a cranker.

I throw pretty hard and even using old balls can get a pretty good curve.

I've talked to a few people who suggest I get a ball with a 2" pin placement and a 3oz top weight.

A few other friends I have said I should get a ball with a 2" pin placement and a 2.1/2oz top weight.

My question is... does it matter much for my style? And the difference between 3oz and 2.1/2oz, does that matter?

I'm kind of confused and I'm not even really sure if I'm posting this in the right forum?

Anyhow, help would be very appreciated.

No, anybody that squibbles over a half ounce of topweight is obviously too caught up in themselves.  Coverstock and core are going to control nearly all of the reaction anyway, and between the two, I think pin distance probably matters more than topweight.  However, either one of options that were recommended are good suggestions.

Well as a slower speed guy with some moderate revs I find starting and ending top weight makes a big difference.

Most people take out about 1.5 to 2 ounces of material to drill a ball.
This means a moderate handed person who buys a 3ounce top weithball probaly ends up at near 1.5 ounce top weight after drilling.

A 2 ounce top weight ball will end up 1/2 ounce to 0 making the ball roll earlier and sooner but will only apply moderate backend compared to an everything else the same 3.6 ounce ball.

I agree with lucky and hammy, topweight is not very important.  Like they previously stated it only depends on ball speed and such.  The higher the top weight the more length and bigger pop (normally).  I like high top weight balls but I am not overly picky.  However, extremely "pin-in" balls (0-1 inch pin) are alittle more challenging to drill for a high track player.  It may cause the ball to hit the finger and/or thumb holes.
