« on: April 15, 2008, 10:32:53 AM »
Just curious do any of you right after bowling, clean you bowling ball with the ball spinner? I just got one, and was wondering what some of you do? also do you scuff it up and give it a hot water bath to get the oil out or just clean it? I would like to hear some suggestions thanks

I usually always clean my equipment after I bowl with my spinner. Sometimes I get lazy and I don't though. I had an old Ultimate Inferno in my room and just for kicks decided to sand it down to 180 grit and give it a long hot water bath. Then I re-sanded it to 180 and took it up to 1000 grit and polished it. The ball was still in kinda bad shape, but I took it to my local alley and shot a 278 game with it. Man oh man was that a great ball.

Right after bowling you really don't need to use a spinner to clean your equipment.  Just use a good ball cleaner, a clean towel, and some good old elbow grease.

IMHO, spinners are useful for the "once a month" ball maintenance that needs to be done to restore lost reaction and hot water baths or other forms of oil removal can be done when maintenance on the spinner no longer suffices.

Right now I use Ebonite Powerhouse cleaner and Clean n' Dull. To polish my stuff, I use Brunswick High Gloss polish.

Unfortunatly, todays balls are very high maintenance.  At least the more aggressive ones are.  My Resurgence requires getting the oil out about every 25 games.  After I do this, I use the spinner with clean n dull then I use 1000 abralon to bring it back to factory finish.  In between that I just use a rag and some IPA.

IMHO a spinner is only useful at home if you have a lot of balls that require frequent treatment - surface refreshments or the occasional resurfacing (which is hardly necessary if you keep the balls in general good shape).
You might even not need it if you just want to sand a ball, without special tricks like sanding line orientation with your initial track etc. For polish, a spinner comes in handy, though.

With 2-3 balls, you are IMHO better off when you have them re-worked every couple of months at a pro shop, sometimes you can have access to a local spinner for DIY work on the balls. It is nice to have a spinner at hand - but not deadly necessary.
