Pitch Questions

My span is roughly 4 1/2 maybe a little longer.  I am currently at 0 and 3/8 reverse.  Thumb feels snug but it feels like im losing the ball and have to grab a bit.  I was thinking of changing my pitches.  I was at the pro shop today they suggested changing to 3/8 forward and 0 but I was scared that was too much forward what do you guys think?

I would be cautious with 3/8 forward.  I am personally at 0 front to back and it was a heck of a transition from 3/16 reverse.  I am not a clamper and use very little pressure when holding the ball.  I rely on tape and rosin mostly with a relaxed swing.  I would suggest taking baby steps.  Maybe just try an 1/8 reverse or 0.  maybe combine a small pitch change with a bit higher bevel thumb.  It could also be mechanics/timing related - i.e. turning the hand early in a forced down-swing.

3/8 is a lot of reverse for a 4 1/2" span unless your thumb is extremely stiff.  Put a large slug in a ball and move forward from there, I would try 3/16 reverse first.  --  JohnP

my fault it is 3/16 reverse and 0. He wants to go 3/16 Forward and 0.  I think I should try a smaller move first

That would be a huge move of 3/4" difference.

Depending on how bad you are loosing it but I would agree with JohnP and no more than going to zero.

I would also be concerned about your finger pitches.  If they are 0 and and 3/8 you may still have a problem.  A lot of drillers???  drill 0 /, 3/8 thumb and the fingers  3/8 lateral, 0 in the fingers.  They put your hand in a jayhawk ball and just change the span.  Unfortunately this is not the correct way to do things.  There is a big difference between a 3 1/2 inch span with these settings and a 5 1/4 inch span with the same settings.  If you change the thumb the fingers will most likely need changing also.

smash, ur right.  The finger pitches he said he would change to 3/8 reverse and the thumb pitches would be 3/16 forward and 0.

Right now the fingers are 0 and thumb is 3/16 reverse and 0.  New pitches he wants to put in are I believe are 3/8 reverse in fingers and 3/16 forward and 0.

I would go with the finger pitches he's suggested but still use a large thumb slug and try 0 first.  If you still have a problem you can easily reslug and then try the 3/16 forward.  I've never had much success using forward thumb pitch, causes too much friction/pressure at the base of the thumb.  --  JohnP
