planting your approach or slide..
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:43:33 AM »
i have a nickname my teammates gave me "happy feet"..  think i rush up on the approach to fast..  lately I've been struggling..  guess one of those case that every bowler face in their lifetime..  well here's the story, yesterday i bowled in a mix double tournament.  the approach was a lil sticky..  i can barely slide..   the only way i can do is to plant my sliding foot..  first it was uncomfortable..  i look silly.. and i have to take my time or else i will fall on my face but as the game goes on..  i was doing way better..  first game 199 then 246 and last game 246..  shot 691.. just wanna know do you guys that been bowling for many years..  do you guys plant or slide..  i think i'm gonna start planting coz i feel more consistence..

Maybe if you're obese.  It's no worse than making a cut on the court or the field.  Heck it's probably even less stressful on the knee because you aren't moving at full speed.

eh...don't know if I would agree with that. I have a small frame and have had quad and glute/hip strains that hurt from planting. However, keeping in shape such as leg lifts and riding a bicycle can help.

I used to have a slide back in the late 90's when I was still in youth bowling. Then I did a tournament where the approaches were extremely tacky. No slide at all. I bowled the best ever in my life over a weekend of 18 game's averaging 197 (average at the time was 159). This was back in 1996, I've been planting every since.

When I 1st started doing this I experienced knee and hip discomfort. Had the quad muscle burning feeling by the end of game 2. You have to condition your body for this kind of thing but once you do you shouldn't have any problem's. 11 year's later I'm still bowling the same way with a few thing's that have changed with time and age. Now I'm a little slower, alot smoother, walking much taller, and staying fairly tall at the line with decent knee bend at the line.

BTW, I'm a 315 pound guy at 6' tall.

That's pretty good.  What was your average before planting?

I have quite the balance problems at the line, and I've kinda been thinking about this.  In theory, I would think planting or less slide at least would lead to better balance.  I don't have a big slide but it's more of a normal step then slide, as opposed to what I think better players do.  I'm not really sure how to plant to be honest, but I think it's more in the timing of your approach.  Is that right?
