Changing to a semi roller, need help
« on: December 08, 2009, 07:47:31 PM »
Hi, been bowling full roller for some time, trying to get a better release (such as semi roller)... Checked out youtube for some vids of this, and found a couple of good tips..

I was just wondering if anyone can suggest any tips/breakthroughs they have found.. Since I have been doing this my track is somewhere between the two, early days... I like the tip I found of throwing a nerf ball.. In particular the giving the ball to the lane forcing the hand to stay behind ball, with fingers lifting.. Just hard to co-ordinate both things on the lane.

Love to read your thoughts on this..
Thanks all

Full roller release has the thumb rotating clockwise (RH) at release.  Semi roller release has the thumb rotation counter clockwise at release.  --  JohnP

Does this make more sense to you  --  full roller release, fingers start on the side of the ball and rotate to underneath it on release, semi roller the opposite.  --  JohnP

So with semi rollers finger come more across the back and over ball, whereas full roller, fingers move to the side of ball then lift..

I think I'm slowly getting it John.

A good semi roller release starts with the fingers underneath the ball and as the thumb clears its hole the wrist rotates counterclockwise so the fingers come through on the outside of the ball.  --  JohnP

Isn't that simply coming right around ball, if wrist turns counter clockwise.
This is what I have been doing for too long, coming right around ball, or is there something perhaps that I am missing.
I apologize in advance at my stupidity lol...

Cheers

Have you video taped your release?  If not, ask someone to tape you and do a closeup of your hand as you release the ball, watch it at full speed then in slow motion.  Compare that to the better bowlers using a semi roller release (maybe you can ask someone to let you tape their release) and I think you'll find that your thumb is rotating up instead of down.  Sorry I'm having troauble finding the right words, I think I could help you in person easier.  And, dumb me, I just noticed your name which means you're left handed, so in my previous posts that mentioned clockwise or counter clockwise reverse what I said.  --  JohnP

No probs John... I am working at staying under ball, already ball track is somewhere between the full and semi roller, so seeing some improvement.. I do have a vid but it is only of my old style coming around the ball release... I have checked out Youtube vids a bit.. I think I am getting there slowly, but thanks for your patience and time with me lol..

Cheers mate

See if your local pro shop will let you try out the Ebonite wrist support with the extended index finger.  It's almost impossible to throw a full roller using this support.  After some practice your hand will be used to it's new release and you may be able to stop using the support.

Just a suggestion.  It worked for me when I was trying to get more side rotation on the ball.

Good luck.
