Plastic or Urethane, not your normal question
« on: January 24, 2004, 09:55:57 AM »
I was thinking about only throwing plastic or my urethane messenger during my mixed league.  First off, would you consider this sandbagging since I would probably score better with resin??  I want to be able to hone my skills more and not be the 'area' luxury that resin provides.  I know my messenger will hook when sanded.  It has a lightbulb core with a flip block.  It really cooks when the track area dries up.  I have used my basketball numerous times but I don't carry much with it.  Plastic also doesn't allow me swing the ball at all.  I won't score at all trying to swing the ball.

I don't have much time to practice anymore.  My schedule is like this.

I work one job from 11 to 7am starting sundays through friday morning.
I work the second job Monday--430 to 1000pm, Thursday--6 to 10 pm, Sat 830-430pm.
I bowl league Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.
So as you can see I am always busy.  What should I do?

As always, it depends on the conditions and what you expect to get out of it. If you will have just as much fun throwing plastic, then go ahead, just be aware that it will limit your reaction and your carry, but if the lanes are dry, plastic will carry.  I shot 290 last year with an A.M.F. plastic boogie ball that I was using for spares. The oiler went out and the lanes were bone dry and the ball worked great, but the conditions were EXTREMELY dry by todays standards.

Remember, anything will work if the lanes are conditioned for it, after all, didn't EVERYBODY throw plastic and urethane about 10 years ago? They still shot some big numbers then too, didn't they?

Bones, wait a minute here, you said that you use a different ball on one of your senior leagues.  I thought flingers only needed one, two at the most.

You are right, I would not be bagging if I used the ball to work on my game.  I didn't think of it that way.  There isn't a roll off in this league so I may give it a shot next week.  If I don't think we can continue to win I will switch back to resin.  Winning is first, my goal is for our to team to finish in the top 5.  We are close but not there yet.

The wierd part about the shot on base is that its never consistant.  One week is lighter and the next alittle heavier.  The oil pushes down more when you bowl flingers and that comes into play.  I threw a urethane stingray last year and shot 608.  Nothing great but by 1980's standards, I would have held my head high when leaving the center.

I think I'll do it.

I wouldn't consider it sandbagging since you're bowling on more than one league, and your high yearbook average will be reflected on your sanction card from one of the other leagues.
