Wasted opportunity
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:42:10 AM »
I carry a decent average, but don't have a lot of honor scores. I have one 800 series and a handfull of 300 games. Last night I started with a 265 and then a 280 for 545 after 2 games. I was pounding the pocket and carrying very well, so I was stoked about the possibility of a 300 or 800+  or even both. The outside boards of the lanes were drying up and I was already inside everyone else. Rather than moving really deep I chose to keep the ball inside and tight to avoid the unpredictable outside 10 boards. The result was a clean 205 game. Still a very nice 750 series, but I was disapointed in my lack of carry in the third game (five 9 counts on various first balls). I should of played deep inside to the dry outsides and back to the pocket. I can't help wondering if I had been more aggressive whether or not I could have snagged the 800. Who knows when I'll have 500+ after 2 games again. :(

did the same thing on my monday night league. Turned the corner at 540ish and shot 216 clean. Left two 8 pins and two 10 pins on the left lane. couldn't get the carry.

Louie,

Don't beat yourself up too badly about this. It happens. If you would have tried to be more aggressive, playing the drier boards, you could have been leaving 10 pins or 9 pins as well.  It happens to the best of us.

I have had a fair number of 800 series in my career, but I have also had at least 3 occassions where I have had 570+ after two games and not shot 800. Sometimes as the lanes dry, you miss a move, or your carry just goes away, and no matter what you try you can't get it back. Just continue throw good consitent shots and one day the god of carry will smile on you again and you will get the 300/800 (or both) you are looking for.

I'm still trying to get that elusive 8 and have recently went 279, 277, 169 and 279, 256, 185.  First set the lanes just really broke down and the more I moved in, the more they hooked.  Got caught without my go to weaker ball that week.  Last set, actually started with the weaker ball, Dark Star, and still had a good look the last game but just couldn't carry the 10 the entire game and whiffed two of them.  I guess I just have to keep going back for more. :)

It's easy to second guess yourself. I'll try to give myself more opportunities.

Yeah, don't worry about it, because it just happens some nights. If it makes you feel any better I shot my first 500 in 5 years last night after starting with a 242 and not missing the pocket all night.

Which leads me to a bit of advice...don't mess with your spare ball! I was experimenting with a new pitch in my spare ball and I could never clear it well enough to not push or pull it off line and I left nothing but 10 pins all night long.

That sounds like hell. God I hate the ten pin.
