Plastic Spare Ball and Oil Patterns
« on: March 30, 2011, 12:58:50 AM »
Plastic Spare Ball and Oil Patterns - I hear conversations during league  and tournamen play that the plastic spare ball disturbs the oil pattern. Is this true and if so how does the oil pattern change. Is it a big deal? Thanks - Denny

Plastic balls drag oil down the lane creating hang areas or carry down if they are being used in the track area as a strike ball.  This is the reverse of the modern high performance ball that pulls oil off of the lane.

I listened to Danny Wiseman on above180 and he said he bowled a regional and someone was using urethane on one on a pair and that caused the lane to be very tight during the tournament.  He said everyone who bowled on that lane did not score well on it.  He said modern urethane balls carried down the oil.  I would say that would be like plastic balls except that the urethane flares a bit more and likely pushes more oil down the lane than a plastic ball.

Does this indicate that someone could use a Plastic or Urethane ball during practice and build a hang area that they could use during league play?

Yes.  Sometimes it is done on the PBA TV pair to either set up a shot or screw up your opponent in a heads up singles match.

Unless you have a long practice time, it's not going to work, especially if you have 4 to 5 bowlers on a team. If you got everyone working on creating that area in practice, I still don't think that be enough for it to last past the first game.

It will take a little longer than shadow if there is four of five man team.  The nationals guys do it throughout practice and the first game.  They want to open up the pattern.  THS likely won't need that much grooming, and will it last beyond a game?  I guess it would depend on a lot of variables but I believe it's to build the pattern where you can migrate towards the oil when it does go away, and have some bump on the outside when one misses.

Maybe, find a scratch league and watch a strong team and see how they play the lanes and the way they move when the lanes transition.
