Title: Plastic Spare Ball-Any difference which manufacturer?
Post by: timw on January 03, 2007, 05:15:47 AM
Looking to get a plastic spare ball for 10 pin and other single pin spares.  Does it make any difference which manufacturer?  Brunswick target zone vs columbia white dot vs. ebonite maxim vs storm spare ball.
Any opinions.

Just want a plastic ball, nothing more ? Hard to beat a White Dot for use vs cost. If you're looking for something "cool" or "special", then that's a bit different.

Other than balls with a core, they are so much alike that the differences aren't worth worrying about.  Get one from a company you like and pick out a color you like.  The Blue Dot still has an additive that makes it slightly straighter than a White Dot and I think the Legends Arrow might be the hardest cover still being made.  Other than that, they are more alike than different.

I noticed that as well on bowler's paradise website.
Is a brunswick target zome actuall harder than a columbia white dot?
OR doesn't it make any difference?

I believe the Target Zones are harder and MIGHT make a slight difference on bone dry lanes but it isn't likely you'll whiff a 10 pin unless you bowl at 5 mph.

I have a Target Zone and a Maxim.  For me, there is no difference in the two.

i have a target zone and a ying yang ball from ebonite

the yingyang hooks little bit more, it may because the target zone is 12 lb and the other one is 15 so i cant put as much speed

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

I bought mine four years ago at the Nationals in Knoxville.  It was easy to visit each vendor's booth and get a price for their plastic balls.  I bought solely on price -- at the time the Ebonite Maxim was the cheapest.  For most there will be no difference, so I recommend that you shop by price.

My maxime will turn a couple of boards, even on fresh oil if, i want it to. But ive never cleaned or polished it. Buy the ball that you think looks the best, thats all that matters.

As everyone has stated above, it really don't matter.. If you like Big-B the get a Target Zone..or whatever you like.. They all will hook, if you want them to..But just for corner pins..they'll all do the trick.. As for mine, XXXL.. it's a double duty ball.. i.e. spare ball/fried out lane ball.. only reason I've got it.. Had a Target Zone for awhile..works great too..  GOOD LUCK

Due the process used to put the images on the visaballs they tend to hook about 1-2 boards more than normal plastic balls.

In answer to the question above about hardness scales.  All companies use the Shore D durometer measure for hardness.

If your looking for a ball that just doesn't hook, you got to look at the old reliable Columbia Blue Dot, that thing is hard and is straight

If you still flatten your release using a plastic ball there is almost no difference in any of them. If you try to throw your normal strike release on spares, you may very well see some hook more than others, although the individual weight block layout might have more to do with it than the brand

Bob Hanson is dead on here. That is why I like the Lane 1 Red XXXL for my spare ball on corner pins. Flatten my hand and it will go straight with no hook and throw it like a hook ball when lanes get dry it wil hook some, so for dry lanes I don't need a dry lane ball as this ball serves that purpose also.

I don't think it matters.  I use a Maxim by Ebonite.  Just be careful and not get one of the everclear balls.  I have one from Hammer and it does have a weight block in it.  It hooks way too much.

Haha I have one, as for hooking too much..nah. But I do notice they tend to grab a little more than normal plastic.
