Any Sarge Easter users out there?
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:51:14 AM »
I'm curious how many people use this style of grip? What is the pros/cons? Thinking about drilling a ball up using this grip. I'd like to try and knock off a few revs without changing my release much....

Thank you Dave300 for this post! I have been struggling horribly since I lost about 3 mph due to an illness(Parkinson's Disease). I am totally rev dominant and everything I throw hooks too soon and backends too much everywhere I bowl! I have tried every kind of ball with all kinds of layouts with every conceivable surface prep, to no avail. Urethane and plastic had become my only options. I had forgotten about the Sarge Easter grip. I plugged up a ball that had not been working well and put a Sarge Easter on it, and guess what? I can use resin again!!! I went to one of my desert dry lanes(for me) and had a look I didn't think I would ever have again. Most of the abrupt backend that I could not control is gone! I can play closer to the friction instead of playing 5th and 6th arrow and ringing ten pins all game! I plugged up 3 more balls, for variety. I am using 5/8 reverse and 1/2 right lateral on the conventional ring finger. Thanks also to abrown and Lotsaballs for the starting pitch advice. I encourage anyone who is speed challenged and/or rev dominant to try this! I am excited about bowling well again! Thanks to all who have helped.

Great insight pooh.  I'm a bit of a speed challenged player and I've considered the sarge easter and even just straight conventional(do you get more revs or is the ball roll just defferent between the two?).  I don't have too much of a problem with over reaction, although I would not mind being able to play straighter, and maybe these different grips would help keep me from hitting the ball too much, which I have a tendency to do.

Seriously, I just got back from bowling with a 13lb house ball, because I went with people who don't bowl seriously.  So I figured why bother trying to be serious and just threw a house ball.  I still tried to hook it because that's the natural tendency for me.  I didn't even really try my real approach(maybe twice I did), I just walked up to the line without really stopping and ended up still pushing away with my right foot most of the time(I just started timing my push away with the compression of that step recently).  I found out pretty quickly that it wasn't very easy to hook the ball with my normal approach because I had too much speed for the plastic ball and I couldn't really put enough revs on the ball.  I'm not too sure why that was but I think it was because when I slow everything down I get enough leverage.  But balance was bad as always.

I ended up averaging 175+ which is just a tad under my league average.  I have to wonder what I could do with reactive equipment drilled conventional, bowling like that.

Well, I tried the grip out on a plugged up ball I had. I really didn't see much difference in ball roll, did loss some rotation though. I think I could of pitched it a little different. Started with 3/8 rev 3/8 lat, gonna try 1/2 rev 1/4 lat and try it again...

It seems to alter roll characteristics, not so much revs. Like Lotsaballs posted:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I have used it for 3 years now with a lot of sucsess. I lost some revs a first but once I got use to the grip they came back. The biggest thing it did for me was lower my tilt and soften my backend reaction allowing me to play smaller angles and closer to the friction without chance of over reaction. I say its worth a try, plug up an old ball and give it a shot."

I might be tempted to try this grip.
