Plateaus in bowling
« on: August 04, 2004, 08:28:37 PM »
Just recently I realized that I am stuck in a plateau.  My current avg. is 175 and have maintained that average all last year, give or take a couple pins.  I never really say a dramatic increase over a couple of weeks because if I had 2 or so good weeks, I would have just as many or more bad weeks with it.  For example, had 2 weeks at avg. 171 and 175.  The following 2 weeks had these,201 and 230.  Then back down hill with 158 and 166.  I did pretty much the same thing all year, I just showed my best avg game as an example and yes they were all in the same 6 week block.  My other league was the same way.  I know I will increase in the next couple of years.  I know there are exceptions to everything, like there is a guy I know that averages 200+ after just 2 years.  My real question to you is have you done the same thing, and how long did you stay on your plateau?

I second what Sawbones says. I was in the same situation as you. I averaged 175-178 for the past 3 years and couldnt get my average up. Then I started seeing a coach and guess what, my average is up to a 188, 2 pins shy of my summer league goal. My goal is to average 200+ next season so we'll see how that goes.

Even local bowlers in your house may average high but not have the "eye" for the game. Get a coach, it will be the best thing you could do!!

rabbit,

I wouldn't worry about the score differences. I'd instead try not to have any open frames. Even splits.
A game with string of strikes will give you a good score but is the string your doing or by accident?.
Pick up all spares and you'll leave your present plateau.

While a coach is definately the best way to go...

I recommend a self-examination of your game.  Figure out the difference between your 200+ games and your 160ish games.

Is it an accuracy/timing issue?  Is it lane conditions/transitions? Is it a concentration issue?

You need to figure out what is causing you the most problems and work on that one area.

Keeping a journal is a good idea.  You can buy log books or you can just make your own.  Write down a) where you stood, b) where you targeted, c) what you actually hit, d) what pins fell and most importantly your comments. (Off-balance/shoe stuck/ball choice/etc.)  Then review the log.  It will point out if you have accuracy issues or problems with certain spares, etc.
