RG Grenade and New Blue Hammer?
« on: June 18, 2011, 09:02:53 AM »
I just ordered a Blue Hammer from Buddies Pro Shop.
My pro shop didn't have them in yet...
What difference should I see between the two balls?

TIA,

Duke Harding

Charlest,

Thanks for the report on the AU.  I have an original Faball Blue Hammer that I use for dry lanes and spares.  Carry is not a problem for me with it and the ball still holds up on today's conditions.  I can hook it wall-to-wall if I need to.

But I have a lot of Brunswick in my bag and I am curious about the AU (and the Slingshot).  Any idea how the AU would compare to the OG Blue Hammer?

Thanks

Richard,

I get at least 5 feet more length, maybe more with the Avalanche than I did with the Hype. Hard to recall exactly because I never tried them at the same time. The Hype actually needed more oil, medium-light at a minimum because the cover was so grabby.

The AU is more like a polished solid resin (mild one, though) and the backend is like a strong arc, so it retains good energy even when I over hit it. Only when I don't catch it even a little bit of it, then it may not hook, but I see a lot of dry hereabouts. Only when the backend dry is really long and the rare time when I can actually see an overreaction from my SLingshot (very rare), then the AU will NOT oiverreact. My Slingshot and my AU are very similar.in the amount of oil (or lack thereof) that they handle. Both have a long high pin (5.25" - 5.5" pin to PAP) with CG stacked under the ring finger.

I never liked the original Blue Hammer, even back when it came out because it was always so early for me. To be honest on today's oil, I think the original still needs some firm ball speed, like the AMF Hype Urethane (which for me was very old school and very like the OG Blue Hammer- almost impossible to get a true shine on it due to hardness and very early hooking.).

I have no comparable problem getting any length on the AU. It is much closer to a resin ball in ease of length. SO if you have a high ball speed in comparison to your rev rate,  you may need a rougher surface than the polished one that is stock on the AU. You'll see an old fashioned curve type of ball reaction on a BH or  Hype, whereas on the AU, you'll see a more defined breakpoint but still an arc, never, ever a hockey stick shape.

That's my best comparison. Remember the new Blue Hammer is a very different animal from the old original Blue Hammer (and made by a completely different company).

Richard,

I rebooted my machine and can now see the video. Must have been some problem with Adobe or FLash.
