Playing lanes that are unplayable
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:35:22 AM »
Just got back from daily practice, and I feel like I should just quit. Threw two games of 7's and 10's no problem. Then tried to throw a good series, working on my timing and most importantly consistancy with my release. Lets just say I felt like I was bowling...well there is no word to describe it. Oiless heads, spotty drying midlanes, UNBELIEVABLY unpredictable backends, my sport shot league is easier to play than this was. I tried 2nd arrow, no hook, moved 3 in from that, overhook, moved inside over/under, tried playing the gutter line, no hook, tried the big swing I won't even tell you what happened then(I really suck at the big swing in the first place). So I got tired of it, grabbed my hex(weakest ball) and threw it straight at the 1-3, pocket 8-10. Did it again, ANOTHER pocket 8-10. Any guesses what came next? You guessed right, another pocket 8-10. Three in a row. I tried slowing down and well, again right back to going through the face.

I gave up, I ran out of ideas, I tried more hand positions than I can count, I moved more times on the approach than I have in my lifetime, and well I managed to screw up my release even more (go me).

Has anyone had to deal with this before and come up with some way to beat it? I was thinking maybe going straight with my slate blue gargoyle I will be getting on friday would work but...I really doubt it

Please just give me some advice, I feel like I should just quit right now, there were two open bowlers next to me using house balls kicking the crap out of me with there amazing 170 games. I think I could use some coaching ASAP...

If you bowl around, eventually you're going to run into a condition like this in competition.  I don't know if this is the *best* way to handle it, but when I find myself in this situation, I go to a very weak ball and try to grind out high counts and leave myself easy spares.  Unfortunately, there's not much else that works for me when the lane isn't giving me anything.

I suppose...thing is this was just opening bowling and I really wasn't expecting it, Laybzz, this was at my home house AMF bowland it really isn't common at all but summer out there is pretty slow and sometimes the lanes get neglected and don't get re-oiled if there are no leagues.(Which I am assuming is what happened) You should come by sometime though

I guess you're right, which was sort of what I was aiming at but I could not believe how many pocket splits I was leaving. Normally there is a "spot" to hit to find the pocket, this case there simply wasn't one it seemed like.

I feel your pain. In fact, I feel it a little more often than I'd like to. Not much technical advice to give you but keep this in mind, at least you're blessed with the physical health to get out there and stink the joint up. Plenty of people out there dream of being able to go out and do what you just did, no matter how bad it was, and they never will. Perspective does wonders for the mental game and it all starts with the mental game. You'll be back.

AMF Bowl land in Illinois?

Last time I was there I was as far left as I could get (with those ball returns that stick out about 7 boards farther than any other bowling alley's) without going in front of the ball return playing an extremely tight line with ... I think it was my piranha if I am guessing correctly.

It was not fun times, but conditions like that make you reach deep and learn to adjust.

I think you got it, where I bowl, you can walk in this house one night, come back the next, and the difference between lanes can be like night and day. I've seen floods and deserts, and just about everything inbetween, and yes I've actually learned to drift around our ball returns that stick out forever it seems. I guess you're right, I'll be back out there tomorrow trying to pick up the ground I lost today(go figure). Thanks a lot guys.

Yea, I've come across this from time to time. WAY left... REAL tight, with something that doesn't wanna turn. Not looking for anything more then 2-3 boards turn. Should kick out the 8-10 MOST of the time... if the occasional 5 pin doesn't dent your confidence, you should be able to grind out something mildly respectable.

All comes down to your sparing then. When I used to bowl (note I haven't bowled in coming upto 8 months) and I came across something like this, I used a philosophy my dad told me when I first played golf and was having trouble chipping successfully.

'Don't aim for the hole, just aim for an area within a meter or so of the hole'

Don't focus so much on the pocket, just focus on the headpin. Get good count, and hope to break up the splits, capitalize on the easy spares you leave.

Other then that... pray.

good luck and high scoring
