Playing the Deep Inside and Up the 1-2-3 boards
« on: March 08, 2005, 09:17:48 AM »
Just got back from practice, was working on my game. I realized since I'm bowling a league in a new house I need to add some versatility to my game so I was practicing the deep inside line and playing up the 1-2-3 board (similar to the line Duke was throwing when he threw 300) and I realized well....THAT I SUCK AT IT! Throwing the twig (I think it's called) was not so bad, but I tugged a few 5 boards or more left on occasion. Now playing deep and in...that was ugly. Threw two shots like I wanted to the entire game. So my question is guys...how the H*** do you get lined up and play the twig and deep inside line. Now I don't expect to be able to play the deep inside like Tommy Jones or up the twig like Duke but god I can at least get better in those areas. If I do my avg will skyrocket at my new league house. So guys explain to me how do you do it, and what is a good way to practice throwing these lines?

well they both have to be done on the right conditions. the twig is better played when there is a lot of oil out there. I can't play the twig on a THS unless I'm throwing plastic. As for deep lines, again, gotta have pretty dry lanes usually. (at least for me) and be throwing strong equipment.

I realize the conditions have to be right but that is the thing, my new house is FLOODED in the middle but is bone dry on the outsides. However because of my not so high rev rate throwing it out isn't strong enough to get it back with some "Authority" I need to get it in the dry early and let the ball hook. Hence playing the twig. The reason I want to learn to play deep inside is simply to add versatility. We were bowling on a very flat oil pattern early this year for a tourney and I saw someone throw 279 throwing deep inside, but I was stuck trying to get the ball to hook back from the outside due to my lack of versatility. Easy to say it wasn't working, threw 159, then 119(splits GALORE) and I was benched for the day(high school bowling). Just wanted to let you know guys. Thanks for any advice.

sorry let me rephrase. Equipment that reacts strongly off dry and dry outsides.

Can anyone give me advice on how to play the lanes these ways? Any way I may need to line up or should I be pressing for good forward roll? I realize I am going to have to throw these lines constantly to get comfortable but that is why I'm going to pracitce tomorrow. Just looking for some advice. Thanks.

its hard to tell because its different for every different lane condition. If your trying to hook the ball for some reason when there is still good oil out, your gonna have to throw it much slower. And if your trying to play up the twig when there is no oil your going to have to throw it faster, obviously. When playing straight up, learn to stay really square with your target. When swinging it, learn to open your shoulders a LITTLE bit so you can get the ball out easier.

Thanks for some of the tips but when playing deep and in I realized that hitting my mark was hard enough(I am a straighter player but can swing it a decent bit) but the thing was the ball was not hitting the same "spot" or breakpoint down the lane. Is there anyway to become more consistent at this? I will be trying some advice from Bob Korth I recieved about closing your eyes before you release and learning to "feel" my swing and get comfortable just throwing the ball anywhere. I think this will help but I'd still like to work with deep and inside. Any advice?

I have trouble playing deep lines too. I'm still working on it, but you are going to need something that corners hard if you wanna carry. It helps me to use late timing to get more revs on the ball. I think the hardest part for me is to actually get the ball to a strong breakpoint AND get it to come back to the pocket.

One thing you might want to try, I learned from Robert Smith during his online chat.  What you do, is trace a line from the breakpoint you want, through an arrow/dot to your feet.  That way, you're not aiming for a specific little spot, but rather, your entire line.  It will help you set up a good line to whatever breakpoint you choose.

Hope that helps.

It doesn't throw off my shot or bother me at all. The only thing that screws me up on the deep lines is that I don't have the hand unless they're dry enough. That's just me though.
