Grabbing during swing
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:33:29 AM »
What are everyone's thought's on grip pressure during the swing, from initial setup all the way to release. Should there be any? None at all? Just a little bit? I have heard alot of people say that they grip with they're thumb on purpose. Some people have told me that they grip a good amount and that they try to keep the grip pressure constant throughout the whole swing to alleviate " grabbing ". I guess the theory is that if you grab the same amount from start to finish, it should eliminate the accidental grab at the bottom upon release.

Thoughts? Advice?

Robert Smith told me that I should grip the ball the same amount I would grip a baby bird.

It took some adjusting with my fit, but now I'm forcing my hand open thoughout my swing.

you are correct... at least as far as ive seen in my own experience.

i start with just enough pressure to get the ball thru my pushaway so as not to break my wrist back. then i  feel like im not grabbing at all.

ive heard even on pba telecasts some players i.e. pete weber say let it off your hand. or something to that effect.

it has helped me to think to myself that my leverage comes from my swing and not from my fingers. and i just let the ball come off when it wants to.

Ball fit is key in this area. If it doesn't fit correctly (ie span is to short, holes to big, pitch is wrong) you have no choice but to squeeze to keep the ball on your hand. A great driller goes a very long way towards better scores more consistently.
