2 Questions regarding Equipment and Pins
« on: January 20, 2012, 01:58:00 AM »
1. Has anyone else experience an occassion where a ball just took on a different reaction? I have a 920T which is drilled to be smooth and it gets very little to no use on league nights because it's for tournaments. However, the last 3 weeks I've pulled the ball out due to my 916AT just not really giving me the reaction I need for the night, and instead of my smooth controlled hook I'm getting a ball that just un-characteristically snaps to the pocket. It has been completely un-expected, but the ball has done very well for me. I want to get on a sport shot and see if this is just because of the maintenance at our center.

2. Has anyone had their center put new pins in mid-season?

2.  We are supposed to get new pins by the end of this month - Twisters from what I heard.

I just found it odd. Usually our center would do this type of maintenance over the Summer so that it didn't effect their league bowlers. My average has stayed the same since the change, but it has changed the charcteristics of how many of the lanes play.

1. If you're actually getting a shorter oil pattern, with cleaner backends, maybe it's not surprising the 916 isn't working and the 920T has a snappier reaction. Both need at least medium oil to perform.

2.Yes, some centers don't wait til the end of the season to replace pins.

I don't know about your centers but, our center rotates the pins out very two months or so.  It prolongs the life of the pins.  In my experience new pins don't "carry" as good as old pins, older pins just seem to fly around a little better.

Pins need about 100 games of wear and tear before you will see the carry improve.

I always thought that older pins should fall easier, but for the past few months our old pins have been sliding across the pin decks more than I have ever seen, resulting in a lot of out-of-ranges or pin re-spots.  I suspect the pin decks are not all that clean but others have told me it is the pins and that the new pins will fix that problem.

i think you're right,Gary. When pins skid across the deck and don't fall, there's a darned good chance there a load of oil that's carried into/onto the pin deck. I'm not 100% sure but I'd guess laziness on the part of the maintenance people OR the oil machine has not been maintained properly to do the deck and backend cleaning that it is capable of doing. Many oil machines today do that job, but not all of them. Plus I believe that many maintenance people are not allowed or are not made to attend the classes to learn how to maintain the oil machines, due to "apparent" financial limitations.

I think when the new Twisters come in, they'll probably set new records for sliding unless/until they can get the pin decks cleaner.
