Would any of you trust a pro shop operator that didn't bowl?  It's not like I'm going to advertise it, but there will be some that either know or find out.  The first thought in my mind was the "never trust a skinny cook" saying, but then again, you don't have throw them to drill them.  I'm really pretty proficient at drilling, and like it enough to keep putting up with the occasional retarded customer.  But say for example that you decided to try a new pro shop, and the guy that either worked there or owned it didn't bowl.  Would that make you worry, or do you think you'd care either way?  Lol, or is it worse to see a pro shop operator that SUCKS?!

Hammy, knowing you I wouldnt let you drill any equipment for me any ways lol but truthfully I would give them a shot, if they were good enough then who cares if they bowl? As long as they know what will work/wont work for me then Im good to go.

Years ago you could buy a ball in a SPORTS SHOP (DAVEGAS, to name one) and there would be a saleman there that would sell you the ball/measure you and drill it .. sometimes while you waited. It wasn't until I was bowling MANY YEARS that I realized that WASN'T THE WAY it should be done.

I would say that it's not necessary for a ball-driller to be a BOWLER .. but I think it gives the BUYER a lot of CONFIDENCE to know that he DOES BOWL!

Most bowlers (I'm in that group) are not like the MAJORITY of bowlers from this site .. we know little about drilling .. more about how the ball FEELS!I would venture a guess if you were an occassional bowler and a ball driller .. it would be acceptable to 85% of your potential customers!

Along these lines it is my understanding that two great teachers do not bowl.

Only question in my mind is how would you understand new ball reactions?  Do you just simply trust the manufacturer's ink for layout purposes?

I doubt ball reaction is going to change for a while.  A good percentage of the time, I don't get a chance to see new equipment in action unless I've seen a pro on tv use it, or unless someone has bought one and I go watch them bowl after I've drilled it.  Also, I have a wealth of information here.  There's ALWAYS going to be people comparing the newer balls to the older ones.  I never really go completely by technical information that often anyway, cause most of the time it's not as accurate as they intend it to be.  I get a good deal of my information here, and I find it to be the best I'm gonna find.

the person that does my drilling no longer bowls (and he is young). he is the best in my city. he nevers pushes a particular ball. the only down side is he does not give advice as to coverstock/weight blocks/etc. he doesn't know to sell you a particular ball for your style/game as he doesn't use the equipment himself. so you need to read and make your own decisions. not the ideal person for a first time bowler. but he is willing to spend the time making sure your ball fit is perfect. he knows how to use the tools to mold the grip to your hands not just drill a round hole. one of the balls he has drilled me had not needed a single piece of tape and i have been using that ball for 3 months weekly.

Hammy, as others have stated, the best fitter/drillers are seldom the best bowlers. The same is true in coaching. Trust in a driller/fitter is EARNED, as is a reputation.

If you were close, I would consider letting you drill for me, however, I have 2 of the best here at the same shop, and it is 5 minutes away. If anyone has any doubts about how good, ask Bob Hanson It is my good fortune to have them here, sorry Bob.
