I recently bowled my 6th 290 game (I never have opened in the first then 11 in a row).
I know quite a few good bowlers who have as many or more honor scores as I have but have only one or two 290’s shot.
Why would bowlers of approximately equal ability. Basically same average, same experience, similar physical games, same number of honor scores (290+, 800’s) have grossly different number of 290 games shot.
Could it be after I don’t strike in the first frame I relax and the rest of the game just happens?
Could it be the others knowing they can’t shoot an honor score let up and don’t finish that game?

Hmm...interesting question Pinbuster! I have a hand full of 290's myself and even a few opens-11 in a rows. I'm not sure if there is any hard reason for anyone having more 290's than another bowler? Maybe some people do let up thinking that they don't have a shot at an honor score, but why wouldn't they still be trying to strike?
Personally I don't let up...but there is always the added insentive of a good set, side money or making the cut at a tournament that keeps me motivated. I suppose if I was bowling some fluff league then I might not care, but that's hard to say until it happens.

My highest games have typically been after an 8 or 9 in a row in practice to finish up. Then I get up execting the best throw a great ball and boom 7 pin ring ring flush. Then 10 or so in a row and then usually five or 6 the next game.
No nervousness, don't know why, it just happens.

My teammate has 14 290-299 games, no 300 though. OOF!

I'd take 11 in a row in the same game. The other night I had 15 in a row:
7/ X 9/ X X X X X X XXX 270
X X X X X X 9- 9/ 9/ 9/X 235
somethingsomethingX 9- X XXX 205

710
Never had a 300. Only one 299. No other occurrences of 11 in a row.

If horse racing is the sport of kings, then surely bowling is a very good sport as well.
