Just a random thought on bringing back integrity.

With the recent introduction of the proposed USBC rules the continuing dialogue about "bringing back the integrity of the game" is once again at a fever pitch.  Reading another thread I saw a comment that just possibly could lead to the real answer.  Mandate that there be above ground ball returns.  Think about it.  If we had above ground returns wouldn't it mean that proprietors would have to use more oil?  Wouldn't it limit severely the use of high load particle equipment?  Maybe even eliminate all particles?  It would certainly eliminate any condition that devolved at some point to lofting gutter caps.  I think that, ultimately, it could return emphasis to shot making and hitting targets.  

Or, maybe, I'm just talking thru my hat.

While in theory…. But.

The crankers would complain that it was picking on them as the stroker/fluffers wouldn’t have to get against the ball returns.

The owners of particle equipment would complain to the proprietors to put more oil on the lanes so they can use their balls. The players without the high particle equipment would then complain they couldn’t get the ball to hook.

Most would complain that the rule was unfairly picking on them and not the other guy.

Just like they are complaining about the new USBC rules.

Hmm, maybe not the high load particle, but more oil to combat the hook monsters in  use now.  You couldn't get far enough right/left to use the hook-in-a-box ball with the return in the way.  So either the ball must return to a non-steroid phase or more oil would have to be used - probably some of both.

Rags,

With the strong hook in  box ball you can get very good hook/set reactions. So you wouldn't have to get as far left (for a righty). OR, you could use more oil just placing it between 14 and 14, that would add enough oil to carry the ball down the lane well.

My bowling center has above grounds

Maybe I'm off base here, but I hear a lot above making changes towards the heavy oil side. From what I've seen, it's harder to hit a dry shot. Maybe I'm wrong but there are way more big hook balls out then there are down the lane balls. I 've always thought the drier the shot the tougher it is to put up big numbers. I havnt seen a flooded shot in a tournament in quite some time. Am I looking at this wrong.....

You definitely have something there.

I remember bowling in the World Team Challenge on Staten Island a couple of years ago.  We went in with 5 guys stacked at about 1090 team average.  We saw the oiling machine go out and we were prepared with our Columbia Rages, expecting to be bowling on chicken soup.

My first shot in warmups was right up 8 board, perfect execution for me, and I promptly picked off the 4-7-8.  The deeper I moved, the more the ball hooked.  The whole event turned into the White Dot Open, where the top team shot 2887 over 3 games, or a 192 avg per person.

Dry conditions will bring bowlers to their knees.

How about a reverse block standard house shot?

Sometimes you are truly evil.

I started bowling in the early 1960s and we still VERY rarely ever saw above groundball returns. Even in the rubber ball and laquer age, they were hell. I learned to never throw  deeper than the 3rd arrow for 10 pins. Took a long time to start using the 4th arrow.
