"Pro Pin"
« on: November 20, 2004, 10:00:24 AM »
Whos the moron that came up with this term? Ive seen alot of this on EBAY... Auctioners trying to sell bowling balls with almost useless 6"+ pins to customers that are not well informed. Giving it a name like "pro pin" to make it seem like they are getting something special. Wow, what a scam this is?! Congratulations to you, whoever you are.

Actually it came from the fact that there are some Pros that are using LONG pin distances and there are some benefits. Longer pin distances increase the mass bias strength of the ball due to the high core shift, this causes the ball to have more length, be more dynamic and a stronger PSA.
Storm actually has a special drilling guide that comes with their's and it actually says "Pro Pin" on the drill sheet.

If you get caught in the Storm Track beware it could be a Typhoon or Monsoon with Rolling Thunder and Lightning Flashes that when Unleashed may send splintered Wood flying everywhere.

Longer pin distances DO NOT CREATE A STRONGER MASS BIAS! Pin out distances do not matter a bit except for legality purposes. The core shift that causes a pin out is so insignificant that there would not be a significant difference in mass bias strength from a 1/2 inch to an 8 inch pin!

That being said, pro pins can be drilled successfully, but causes you to be more creative. Pin over bridge, cg on axis, pin on axis, cg in grip center, things you couldn't normally do with shorter pins you can with longer pins. They do advertise it terribly as beginners to ball drilling/ people who have no idea what a pin out even is might think that these are better, while they are no better or worse than any other ball.

Longer pin out distances do increase Mass Bias strength.
Put a "true" symetrical cored ball  that has a pin distance of 0" on a determinator and then put one with a 6" pin on it and see which one reaches its MB/PSA faster. In order to have any negligable MB the ball has to be a pin out (2"+) unless there is dynamic imbalance built into the core.
1/2" core shift may not seem like much but put one a scale and check the weight difference between CG toward and away from the axis point of the scale with the pin facing up. I think the amount of weight diff will suprise you. Since the core is shifted/biased to one side it affectively changes the RG and differential of the ball due to more imbalance (diff) and the RG is now shifted causing 1 side to be more core heavy and the other to be more center heavy, causing the ball to lope more.
Consider how much a car shakes from a tire that is only a 1/2 oz. out of balance. Granted it is spinning at about 1000 rpm at 60 mph but it is also shaking a car that ways 200 times as much as a ball.

I actually purchased one of these "Pro Pin" balls on eBay 2 weeks ago.  I bought the Toxic Storm (an asian release with the same RG and Diff as an FEAR FACTOR, but with a pearl particle coverstock).  This ball came with a 6" pin and the appropriate drilling instructions provided by STORM.  I had the ball drilled up by Mike Miller (PBA) here in Rio Ranhco, NM.  He suggested putting the CG in the middle of my grip and we kicked the PIN out to my PAP.  The ball does have length, but as soon as it hits dry the ball revs up immediately. The only problem is it doesn't like excessively dry lanes, it will track out over the thumb on this type of condition, but overall an excellent ball.

Well i know my cousin got a Super Charge off Ebay that had a Pro-pin and the pin was about 6inches, lol  i seen how it was drilled too,, the pin was way out to the PAP and the CG was in his Palm right above the thumb hole.

But he said the ball hooked like crazy,, but it only came with 1.54 top weight lol

These to me, as stated before, are nothing more than a greatly successful marketting ploy. By any other companies standard these would be considered "seconds". They are great for exotic layouts if your able to get reasonable specs.
