Help me choose the right Ball!
« on: December 09, 2004, 01:40:24 AM »
I recently bought a hammer switch blade, it's not cutting through the oil and isn't drilled very agressivly either so I want something to do more of a skid flip and eat through the heavier oil.  Since I have this ball as a standard down and in ball to fall back on I want to try something more agressive.

I want to play a deeper line and open the lane up a bit, I want to do more of a skid flip. I like to throw somewhat fast, but don't have a ton of rev's on the ball, a decent amount... but i wouldn't call myself a cranker. Here are the balls I was considering.

Track - Animal, or Animal Untamed
Brunswick - Warp Zone
Lane1 - Uranium - not the solid

The last 2 a friend is selling so those would be cheaper.  I think I'm leaning towards the warp zone as it seems to cut through the oil without needing a lot of rev's.  Any suggestions or experience with these balls?  Also... any drilling methods that you would recommend?  I would consider getting the ball drilled for length, but seeing as I have more speed than rev's I'm thinking this might give me problems.

Any advice is appreciated!

The Uranium Pearl is not meant to cut through heavier oil so I would lean toward the Warp Zone.  The Animal wouldn't be a bad choice of the ones you have listed either.  The untamed though is also not intended for heavy oil.

Definately need a LOT more than the switch blade, it doesn't do anything like what the picture on the hammer website shows. I even took the polish off and brought it down to 600 grit. If i try to put fingers in it it just slides and slides, never makes a real break for the pocket. If i want it to do anything I have to roll it basically underhand and it will roll early and come into the pocket. If the lanes are fried I can turn it a little and it will come back sharp... but how often does anyone play on fried lanes when it really matters?

The Animal is not a skid/flip ball but will definitely hook through the oil.

Balls that skid/flip are not usually oilers, because they skid on oil. Balls that roll earlier usually work better on oil. Just a thought. =:^D

An Animal or a Rule would be excellent choices- the Animal being particle will be more of an arcing ball for heavy oil, whereas the Rule will be a little more flippy on the back due to the resin coverstock. Since you say that you are more of a speed player with decent revs, I would suggest a drilling with the pin under ring finger and an early roll drilling- probably something along the lines of a 2" cg to pap and 3 3/8 or 3 3/4 pin to pap distance.

Thanks for all your replies, I am going to take Matt's advice and go with the animal. A friend of mine has the Storm Tripple Xtreme, he throws on the same lanes I do... not flooded but a decent amount of oil. He throws a very deep straight line with a huge flip at the end. Is the Tripple Xtreme designed to be a heavy oil ball? He says he has his ball drilled for length, and he does have a lot of rev's, but I'm suprised by how much this ball flips.  I don't have nearly as many rev's as him so I'm going to stick with the animal.
