What are "blem" specs?
« on: May 02, 2008, 06:56:27 AM »
Do different manufacturers have different standards? Would a 0-1" (with a pin of between 1/4 to 1/2") be a blem? Would it be dishonest of a seller to send me a ball in a box marked 1-2", scratch it out and write in pen 0-1" and call the ball 1st quality? Would the original box have been labeled a blem?

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Pin in's are not well loved by most high trackers but I am a high tracker and just throw the pin under ring about 4 1/2 and usually like the ball reaction a pin in ball has.

But then again I usually get these for dirt on ebay because nobody hardly bids on them.

How does scratching through the label on the box make it first quality?  I'd think the original box would say 2nd or X-out or however the manufacturer marks blems.  Where's the original box?  If he has it, why wouldn't he use it?  Because it says "2nd" on it?

I would not pay first-quality price for a 1/2" pin.

I've had the following show up at my house as a "second", "blem" or my personal favorite -- "comp." "Comp" makes it sound like a free room at a Vegas hotel. Such a pleasant word, no?

1) Dyno-Thane Cure with 5.35 oz. top weight. My driller played with drilling depths and unbelievably got it to work without having to have a weight hole. But I got cussed for it something fierce.

2) Storm Paradigm pro-pin. I was expecting a 6-7 inch pin. I ended up with an 11.5-inch pin. Same driller had to drill this one. If I thought I got a cussing when I brought the Cure in, I hadn't seen anything yet. This one ended up with a moon crater weight hole but it's legal. Ended up being a good buy because the ball's reaction fits a niche I didn't otherwise have.

3) Track Arsenal Angular with .5 oz. top weight and color issues. The color actually looks better than "stock." It's heavy on the black, with some red mixed in and it looks like a meteor. The low top weight wasn't a huge deal but this ball is about as angular as an egg's shell. Very smooth.

4) Storm X-Factor Mission 35. MB and CG are on top of each other about 7 inches away from the pin. Never could get that ball to work really well for me.

I've also had balls that were either too big or too small to fit in the jig properly. I've had balls that were supposed to have three colors that ended up with just two, and I've had a couple that were supposed to be a solid color that ended up with two or three colors mixed in. On the other hand, I got a brand-new Track Machine once for $70 drilled because Track simply forgot to put color in the logo. My logos were apparently supposed to be yellow and white with a little sparkle in them; instead, they were simply white. I'll take white logos if it means I got the ball for 66% off.

Your driller should have flipped the ball over and drilled the 2" anti-pin instead.  The MB remains the same.  You could have used traditional layout techniques instead of having to do goofy stuff and had a nice versatile piece instead of niche piece.

We talked about that, but I wanted to see if we could do it with the specs given.

Had I not gone ahead and done that, in the long run I would have unknowing screwed myself out of some money and success. I can use that ball on anything from Shark pattern to bone-dry lanes but it has a very narrow operating range (i.e., it can't play inside and outside; it must be up the boards or pointed off the corner).

If/when this ball gives out, I may take a ball with standard markings, flip THAT one over 180 degrees and drill something to match this ball.
