is it true the polishing machines found in bowling centres are bad for your bowling balls?

depends on what you want the ball to do.  The brunswick X-zones were ran through one before they shipped out.  It changes your reaction, and it can be benificial depending on your style, shot, equipment, etc...

However, if you like your balls reaction, you don't want to do it.  Of my 8 balls, I have 2 that I'll throw in the machine, and they are mainly for med-dry to dry conditions.

I would say your best bet is to have the ball resurfaced back to its box condition. Take it to the pro shop, they should be able to help you.
