Political Bowl-Off
« on: September 11, 2004, 07:11:16 AM »
NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Democrats and Republicans around
the country will take their partisan sentiments to the bowling alley
for the first Bowl-Off between "Team Red" and "Team Blue."
Former U.S. senator and New York Knick Bill Bradley Thursday
announced the launch of the Bowl-Off, sponsored by the Web site
Meetup.com and the Professional Bowlers Association, to help bring
together Americans on opposite sides of the political spectrum.
Bradley called the event "a wonderful opportunity to forget
the rhetoric, banners and accusations for one night and meet at your
local bowling center to find your community."
The competition was inspired by the best-selling book
"Bowling Alone," by Harvard sociologist Robert Putnam, which argued
Americans are becoming increasingly disconnected from friends,
family, neighbors and the country's democratic structures,
Meetup.com said in a statement.
The Great American Meetup Bowl-Off will start Oct. 8 in
bowling alleys around the country. Information is available at
Meetup.com's Web site at meetup.com/bowloff.
