Poll...Barnes with a New Company
« on: September 20, 2004, 05:32:38 PM »
So, unofficial word is Chris Barnes is no longer going to throw Brunswick, and will now throw Columbia.  Let's say Chris finally has the break out, player of the year, year that most of us feel he can have.  How many of you will say it's the equipment, and how many will say he finally got over the hump, mental or otherwise?

I'm willing to go on record that I think Chris will have a break out year which will lead him to HoF, and that it will have nothing to do with what ball he throws.

What's your opinion and why?

It doesn't matter what company Chris goes with, he is a legitimate super star, he can make any ball work.  He along with many of the tour players are phenomenol when it comes to ball drilling and such.  He will figure it out.

I haven't heard any such rumors, I find it hard to believe Brunswick would let him get away.

I think barnes is a great bowler but when the cameras are there he chokes big time he bowls like I do everyday and that is bad it is not the ball he throws if he chokes on half the shots he throws.

I totally agree with you Mike.  He is definitely the most talented player on tour who could do well with any company.  Yeah.  We had differences in the past about a similar subject, but I agree 100%.  I have not heard anything about him jumping to another ball company.  BUT.....if he was to stay with Brunswick, would he be allowed to throw the BVP balls like the Goliath and Nemesis?  Just curious.

Well I don't think ball company change will make a difference. Chris went to Wichita State and there they teach you how to win as a team but nothing about indivual competition. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

Chris has some serious skillz and I'm sure he could use any company and in a months time be at the top of his game.  I've seen Chris pick up some blank balls that Brunwick was testing and watched him strike from the second board to the fifth arrow and he'd never seen that ball.  This wasn't just on a fluffy walled house shot either.  It was during the College Nationals in Tulsa a couple of years ago and the shot was pretty tough.

Barnes will break out one of these years and kill em.

This year because of slight change in equipment characteristics coupled wiht more confidence and then it will go round and round!!!  Better fit equipment for him, more confidence and they are all in trouble.

Note Columbia is not better equipment just probably better for his common error.

I agree but he can't beat the top 1% with Brunswick!!!

Again that doesn't mean Brunswick is not good.  I just don't ever think it matched his style as well as Columbia will!

Changing ball companies isn't going to help Barnes a bit if he continues to choke when the "heat is on" and the "money is on the line." If he ever learns to overcome that, then he will be able to win with any ball company.

It would've been cool to watch Barnes toss some of the new stuff (Intense, Goliath, Nemesis, etc,) but it will also be cool to see him throwing C300. I haven't thrown any for a long time, so it will be kind of neat to see what some of their stuff does.

As for the choking comments, I really don't think that not winning titles necessarily equals a choke. Lonnie W. being locked in and then washing out 2 weeks in a row, those were chokes. To me, it's a different story to just lose reaction and get beaten from start to finish as opposed to flagging a shot that you have no reason to flag just because of what's on the line. I know that opinons vary greatly on this, but that's just my .02. But I'm a big choker, so I know how to tell the difference ; )

SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE POLL..? ya never know who's listening,..for those of you who don't know MR B, he can take the contructive criticism, just keep it clean. Professional atheletes live in a fish-bowl, he knows that, but they also like to hear how knowledgeable people preceive their performances...both good and bad. Be fair, be knowledgeable, be honest,...you'd be surprised who reads these boards.  jim

I’ve heard more of his contemporaries complain that Columbia’s roll is no good on the PBA patterns than have complained about Brunswick equipment.

That being said, if he feels he can win as much or more using Columbia then go for it.

But just like Mickelson (Changing from Titleist to Callaway) at the Ryder Cup he will be open for a lot of criticism if he has a down year.

As far as the choke label, I don’t know. His threshold is obviously very high because he makes to many shows to be choking during qualifying. But to date he has had a penchant for throwing the one bad shot that cost him match.

I also feel a lot choke talk on Lonnie is overdone. Everyone remembers the two bad shots last year but remember that neither Pete nor Walter Ray were exactly lighting the pair up against him. His mistakes happen to come a crucial point in the match and both times paid the big penalty. Had he just left 1-2-4’s both times and spared you wouldn’t be hearing any of this.
