I must say that Richard Wolfe has helped me tremendously. Our first lesson was about 3 hours. The first 2 hours not even throwing the ball, but at a table discussing the physics of bowling. THEN, we transferred that knowledge to the lanes and worked on targeting (working with my approach and release at that time). On subsequent lessons, we worked on releases and trajectory and timing, etc.
For those who don't know Richy, he's currently on tour - exempt, 49th I think. Made a top 15 in the first half of this year and 18th last week. He's got a very smooth, classic style delivery. A real nice guy and very patient coach.
But those first two hours of my first lesson were just, well..., let's just say that I didn't expect a physics lesson in my bowling lesson. But it sure did give me good understanding of ball/lane interaction and reaction before even hitting the lanes.
I must that I've never listened to anyone talk with such an understanding of the physical (and by that, I mean physics, not athletics) nature of the game. Not even Dick Ritger, and I spent 4 days with him. Oh, and Richy is a youngster. Compared to me anyway.
