POLL: Should league bowlers get a pro shop discount?
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:09:44 PM »
Not talking about your ball a month regular customer, but your average every day league bowler... Is it right that they expect a discount?

Discuss.

I don't think a customer should expect a discount.  But it's nice to get one.  And I don't see anything wrong with offering something to league bowlers or good customers.

The guy that used to own the pro shop I go to would give you what he called a service package.  If you bought the ball there, you got 2 free resurfaces and a free set of (replacement) grips.  He also used to give some of the better customers a discount (like 5-10%).  I never expected it, sometimes I didn't get it, but I never turned it down.

Ever since I started doing business with my current driller he has done a lot for me with little or no charge and in return I try and direct as many people his way that I can. I think that leads to a great relationship with each other and it just benefits us both. He has given me free grips a couple times, and even baked and resurfaced my ball for no charge. Even if I buy my balls online he treats it like I bought from him. He knows I drive 40 minutes to get to him and he treats me very well. So I try and do right by him in return. I wish more people ran their business that way.

the pro shop owner I deal with, who also owns the bowling alley. He gives discounts to bowlers that bowl in his leagues and are good customers in the pro shop. I buy mostly all my equipment from him, and he gives me really good deals. Less than going on the internet and paying that price then $50 for drilling. He does this for all the people who buy their equipment from him.

I do not think he does it for the bowlers outside of his leagues though. I also get vaccu grips and such for the same price as standard grips.

I feel that this is a good way to go about helping your repeat customers.

if you are cost competitive to the internet, no, but if are a full retail shop and you do nothing to entice bowlers to enter your shop, all you have to do is look in the mirror to understand why brick and mortar shops are going by the wayside

even if you dont own the alley, the shop is a intergral part of the alley operations, if you do your part to help out the alley, the alley via its customers will help you out

No, my driller will give discounts on surface alterations if you buy balls from him.  But will not give discounts on goods and shouldn't.

a lot of very quick no's
but in these economic times WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ATTRACT AND KEEP NEW CUSTOMERS?

what sort of promotions are you doing, what sort of door openers are you doing to bring em thru the door?

failure is based upon the lack of trying

shop at our local alley closed, you wanna know why?  full retail with no wiggle room, guy in league who has a shop out of his house, sold 20 plus balls out of his car to two leagues with a total of 20 teams, not a lot of business but enough that the house shut down the shop (no it wasnt me) all because the owner was unwilling to be creative and try to keep business (sad part is they knew this guy was selling and let him do it)

This is a tough one, on one hand if the center owns and operates the shop, than it is in there best interest to offer discounts.

But, on the other hand I could see how a private operator would/could say no, they have over head to worry about, let alone they are being under cut by the internet, plus having to deal with lane problems

but a discount is like a rebate, not everyone will take part, knowing that if you offer a discount to a leauge with 100 bowlers and only 20 take you up, its not a big hit

I dont think a discount should be given all the time, maybe a disoucnt to start the league every year (usually the time most buy a ball) and then another at tax time/end of league when people have some disposable income, and it doesnt have to be goods either, services are fine.  I am just of the opinion that in order to keep and or build business, measures should be taken

If I ran a pro shop, I would offer a discount to league bowlers.  League bowlers shouldn't EXPECT a discount, they don't have some intrinsic right to it, but as a pro shop operator, I'd offer one.  Granted, it'd be a small one, 10% for example.  But the idea is to create goodwill and show the bowlers at that center that I care about them, and it creates a little extra buzz for my pro shop.  The extra business I create from just having my pro shop mentioned a few times at league meetings, and people appreciating the goodwill aspect of any discount, should more than make up for the 10% I lose off each transaction.

No every bowler should not get a discount.  If you want to run a special or sale at the begining of the season that that is your choice and probably a good idea.  I would not just give the run of the mill bowler a discount just because he bowls.  I have never asked for a discount from my driller.  I do get one but I also buy 3 or 4 balls a year from him.

Cheap*** bowlers!  HELL NO!  **** them in their hairy ***es, they all should pay FULL RETAIL plus some!  If they want cheap, they can buy their **** from the interwebs!

Besides, they're nothing but an undeserving bunch of dumb***, no-talent house hacks anyway!  They're lucky I even acknowledge they exist!

Not unless you mark everything up and give a discount to everyone. Not kidding. People feel good when they are not paying full price.

Just do what K & K does which offer rewards money on a credit type of card towards future purchases, also sponsor tournaments and give cheap lessons.

to me what these guys do is all no brainer's, wonder if that could be the reason they basically own the las vegas market after 8 years in business???

Believe me there is plenty of money to be made if your marketing is done right, if you are in a big enough bowling area to make it work.

If in a 16 lane or under center that caters to open bowlers, keep your day and call it a day.

Btw I am not affiliated with them just a customer that watches a pro shop being run the right way, service and price will bring them back everytime.

I also use the bowlers rewards cards. Gave out a card to EVERY league bowler. Each card had a credit already loaded in the card. Also give out a card to non league bowlers that come in looking, telling them that they already have a credit in the card towards a purchase and then a percentage of the cash out of their pocket goes back in the card for a future purchase and it keeps going everytime they buy something in my shop. Credits back in the card go anywhere from 5-15% of money spent on new purchases. With the economy right now I'm not seeing a great return but HOPEFULLY things will turn!
