Beyond the friction aspect, there's also the ball's construction (with few exceptions) that promotes the long skid. With a high RG and low differential, there's little inertia help which would support the polyester low friction cover. You will hardly get a pancake polyester into the typical skid/hook/roll sequence, since its rotational axis will not change much upon rotation. Any hook you generate comes just from the side rotation and the little friction between cover and lane, so a pancake polyester's movement as such is quite different from a reactive with a low RG core and with a grippy cover. Even Lane #1's XXXL benefits from its core, which promotes a stable forward roll.

I think the original question was whether or not a polyester ball will hook...

the most definitive answer is YES....a polyester ball WILL hook IF the conditions permit it to do so.

A polyester ball does not have the same hook POTENTIAL as a reactive resin or urethane ball.

My league bag currently has 2 polyester balls in it...a Lane 1 black XXXL and a Columbia white dot...why? The XXXL is too much ball at times to use as a spare ball but it the cat's meow on toasted lane conditions.

If friction is present any ball will hook...polyester balls need more friction than urethane which needs more friction than resin which need more friction than particle balls.
