Be Honest, Would you Quit bowling if .........
« on: January 25, 2010, 05:22:09 AM »
If you lived in a area that only had 1 bowling alley and the next closest bowling alley was 30miles away, and the house you bowl in put out a tougher shot????  either by flattening out the House shot, or by putting out one of the Kegel Challenge shots??

I ask this because yesterday while practicing I got to talking to the GM of bowling alley i goto about possibly putting out a tougher shot to practice on...

And I brought up something about why they dont "toughen" up the shot a bit?  He reply'd that he did toughen up the shot a bit lol..  which kinda made me laugh cuz I'm averaging higher than i did last yr...    But I asked why "they" or as in the house doesnt use something like a Kegel Challenge pattern, which is what is used for our State tournament...

His response was, most bowlers would quit...  And I said something towards the fact of, no other bowling alley being within 30miles of here...   And they could basically put out w/e pattern they want, and bowlers would just have to deal with it...

His response was, "they would quit, they would quit bowling...and just do something else."

He also brought up, how one friday nite this season he accidently put out the Highway to hell challenge pattern..  and out of the 18- 5 man teams, there was 1 or 2 600's a couple 500's and the rest was in the 400's...  He said he never seen so many 100 to 130 games by so called "good" bowlers...

But anyways,,,,  would you just quit if your house made the shot a bit tougher???

This topic comes up from time to time ,on this site and at my local center and the answer is all ways the same (bowlers will quit if the shot is hard).I bowl with a good # of bowlers in two different centers and all of them would wellcome a change.Way to many average bowlers with over 200 averages, me being one of them.I have as of yet found any one who owns up to quiting if the shot gets more diffcult.I do wonder if it costs more to put out harder shots.I do know that one year we had a true sports league shot and had a large # of people that joined the league that summer, but the guy that ran it said it was a hassle pulling tape and keeping the oiler in shape. It was time consuming and the owner would not do it the following year.I do not know but would love to see one of the centers bite the bullet and make the move back to the sport.

Live free or die trying.

yea that seems to be typical of guys who run a true SS league, they always complain after the season about pulling tape and such.. As for the oiler, IDK i mean if you keep the oiler in good shape and maintain it properly it shouldnt be a issue.
The thing I laugh about is, like you said, most guys will welcome tougher conditions.  Because in the end, you end up a better bowler, and dont have a seriously inflated average.  Which does you no good if you goto another house for a tournament and cant figure out why your 30pins below average....
which is something I've seen more often than not..   I really believe too many people put a importance on thier "league" average, instead of what thier tournament average is......

One key to your post was only center for 30 miles.  If they are "easier" options available close by, then a lot of bowlers will push the easy button as an earlier poster called it.

One thing I have noticed in my area.  If your league has any "big dogs" who bowl (regional players or good amateurs), the wanna be's want to compete against them.  And the wanna be's know that on tougher conditions, they have no chance.  But on easier THS, they have a chance.  (Not saying it is a fair or deserved chance).  There's is a lot of side action (brackets, side bets etc) that goes on, and if it wasn't an easy shot, the wanna be's would go bowl somewhere else.  That is who would quit in my opinion.

I live about 1/4 mile from one of the highest scoring houses in town...and I drive right past it about 3.5 miles to another house that runs a PBAX league and a classic scratch league.

No I wouldn't quit.Just take it as opportunity to further improve my skills. The challenge I

have is not carrying on THS as well as others. While this may upset others,I just use it

as a chance to find the correct match-up of ball, drilling, line, and physical adjustments.Others

may carry better, but it is up to me to figure this out. This is what you would call" grabbing

the bull by the horns". and taking control over your environment and your mind.

Living in a large metro area like Detroit, there is a center or two  in every  city ,so I don't

have to drive far to find another league.

Why quit. Bowling is bowling. You throw the ball down the lane and the objective of the game is to knock the most pins down. The lane condition will and is the same for everybody that is bowling. Be the house shot, Highway to Hell or Dead Man's Curve. I do not care. If you are a whinner and a cry baby then learn how to really bowl.

I wouldn't quit. I just want to know what I'm bowling on. I expect my Tuesday night mixed league to put out an easier shot than my Friday Night Scratch League.

i wish my house would put out a tough shot, then all the 190 average bowlers would slowley drop down to 160 average and they would see how much better us 210+ average bowlers are when our average stays the same.

No, I would not quit but I'm sure he's correct that most bowlers would quit or try to find somewhere else to bowl.

Last Monday i had scope surgery on my left knee. The last night of bowling the week before, I shot 685 on 1 1/2 legs. That is the dumbest thing in the world. Any ball I didn't grab on went to the pocket. If this is what people call bowling, count me out. Most bowlers will quit if they decide to make it tougher. I for one, think it should be mandated that it is more difficult. If the patterns were always flatter, perhaps the youth bowlers wouldn't be so obsessed with trying to crank the ball. To answer, no I would never quit because it is difficult.

No way, I'd bowl there 3x a week. I'm sick of these easy cry baby house shots. NOBODY is our lovely association (Ashtabula County, Ohio) wants to find out how good they're not, so they all bowl on adult bumpers. I'd much rather ave 200 knowing I earned it that ave 235 basically blindfolded.

One house I bowl in towards northern NJ would lose a lot of business.  There may be some very good quality bowlers but 90% take advantage of the Great Wall.

I'm a house hack by any means but I'll never forget the guy bowling next to me averaging 197 who had no clue what he was doing...

But I already travel the state bowling at different houses so I take what they give me each year.  Thirty miles is actually pretty close to home lol.
